Mustangs Win First-Ever Meeting with Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. - Nine different players had at least one goal, led by seniors Lisa Baker (Westminster/Westminster) and Megan Weiss (Odenton/Seton) as well as freshman Marissa Meiklejohn (Glen Burnie/Old Mill) who each had three as Stevenson posted an 18-6 victory over Frosburg State Tuesday at Bobcat Stadium.

The Mustangs (8-5, 5-2 CAC), who picked up a win in the first-ever meeting between the two teams, jumped out to a 6-0 lead with all six goals coming from different scorers, including sophomore Meghan Najewicz (Baltimore/Perry Hall) who netted her fourth of the season just 3:57 into the game to start the scoring.

The Bobcats would answer with three of the next four, all of which involved Malory Brunett who had two goals and one assist as they cut the deficit to four, 7-3 with 6:24 remaining in the opening half.

However, Weiss would add Stevenson's fourth free position goal of the half with 4:55 left to give the Mustangs an 8-3 lead at the half.

Stevenson dominated the opening 30 minutes, holding a 25-7 advantage in shots and scoring on four of six free position attempts.

Just like the first half, the Mustangs scored the first six goals of the second, all in the first 7:02 and two of which came from Meiklejohn who tied her career-high with five points for the second consecutive game.

Meiklejohn, Baker and Weiss all finished with three goals and two assists while junior Emily Gartrell (Jarretsville/North Harford) had two goals and one assist. Junior Laura Grammer (Parkville/Perry Hall) and freshman Mandy Marston (Baltimore/Institute of Notre Dame) had two goals each.

Junior Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park/Severna Park) made eight saves to pick up her eighth win of the season before giving way to freshman Lauren Legnaioli (Union Bridge/Francis Scott Key) who made her second appearance of the season.

Brunett and Ali Kapustin led Frostburg State (4-9, 3-3 CAC) with two goals and one assist each. Karoline Miller made a season-high 15 saves, including 11 in the first half.
