Shea Sets Three Records as Dolphins Sail Past Mariners

Yonkers, N.Y. Mount Saint Vincent senior Mike Shea (Congers, N.Y.) set three program records on Tuesday night in the Dolphins' 21-9 victory over Mitchell on Senior Night. Shea moved into first place all-time in points and set single game program records in goals with eight and points with 10.

Needing two points to set the all-time record in points at Mount Saint Vincent, Shea used an assist and the first of his eight tallies in the first six minutes to set the new mark. Following his 10 point effort he stands at 123 points in his three year career at the Mount.

The Dolphins used a five goal first quarter to pull in front and never look back in the game. Shea scored twice in the frame as the Mount took a 5-0 lead into the second period. Both teams opened the offense up in the second as the two squads combined for 13 goals. The Dolphins scored nine of the tallies, including the first six of the stanza to carry a 14-5 lead into halftime.

Mount Saint Vincent continued its high scoring attack in the second half, outscoring Mitchell 7-4, including 5-1 in the fourth period. Shea scored half of his goals after halftime, with John Petito (Staten Island, N.Y.) scoring two of his four goals in the fourth.

In all, Mount Saint Vincent had seven different goal scorers on the night and five players with at least two tallies. Shea led all players with 10 points and also picked up four groundballs for the Dolphins. Petito added his four markers to go along with seven groundballs and Rowan Frederick (Brooklyn, N.Y.) posted two goals and an assist for the Dolphins.

Senior Cavan Valance (Glen Cove, N.Y.) continued his productive season with a five point effort on Tuesday, scoring three times and adding a pair of assists. He also totaled two groundballs.

The Dolphins held the edge in every category against Mitchell, outshooting the Mariners 44-20 and leading in groundballs 50-32. Matt DeSimone (Congers, N.Y.) and Bruce Pappas (Montrose, N.Y.) led the way in groundballs with eight each.

Mitchell was led by three goals from Shane Sullivan who also assisted on two others for a five point night. Adam Grillo posted three points with two tallies and an assist and Erik Vasquez scored twice and added a pair of helpers to go along with a team-high eight groundballs.

The 21goals is a season-high for Mount Saint Vincent and is just one off the program record set on March 24, 2009 also against Mitchell. In the Dolphins' five wins this season they are averaging just under 15 goals per game, while in their four losses they are scoring just 6.5 goals per game.

The win is the Mount's second straight and moves it back over .500 overall on the season at 5-4. The Dolphins will return to Skyline Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Mount Saint Mary on Saturday. Face-off with the Knights in Newburgh is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
