Susquehanna Fights off Rain, Shepherd for Victory

SELINSGROVE, Pa. A little rain did not dampen Susquehanna's spirit, as the women's lacrosse team used a 13-10 win over visiting Shepherd to capture its sixth-straight win of the season.

The Crusaders (7-3) used eight first-half goals to hang on for the win over the Rams (5-6), who outscored SU 6-5 in the second half of play.

Erin Dyer (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) netted a game-high six goals while freshman Michelle McGinnis (Randolph, N.J./Ranolph) added a hat trick. Sophomore Alexa Green (Wilmington, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) scored her second and third goals of the season.

Lindsey Derstine (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and Kirsten Detwiler (Montchanin, Del./Wilmington Friends) added two goals apiece. Sarah Wright (Princeton, N.J./Princeton HS) set up the offense all afternoon with her game-high three assists.

Freshman goalie Katelyn Brower (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made her first collegiate start and finished with 10 saves in her 60 minutes of action, seven of which came in the second half.

SU held a slim, 34-31 edge in total shots but did capitalize on six of its 12 free-position shots.

After going up 1-0 on Dyer's first goal of the game, Susquehanna fell into a 2-1 hole after back-to-back Shepherd goals in a 13-second span.

That Rams' lead lasted less than three minutes as Detwiler's score at 21:33 tied it at two-all and sparked an 8-0 Crusaders run that handed them a 9-2 advantage with 9:31 to play in the half. Shepherd rattled off four unanswered goals of its own to make it 9-6, but SU scored three of the final four goals of the half to lead 12-7 at the midway point.

Scoring was at a relative premium over the final 30 minutes with just 10 combined goals. Ainsley Rossitto opened the second-half scoring with a goal at the 26:32 mark that made it 13-7. After a Shepherd goal at 23:37, SU added three straight goals that made it 16-8 midway through the period.

While the Rams ended the game on a 5-0 run, Susquehanna's lead was too much for them to overcome as the Crusaders came away with the win.

Next game: Saturday, April 9 at St. John Fisher 2:00 p.m.
