No. 6 Ducks Outfly the Hawks in Empire 8 Play

HOBOKEN, NJ Hartwick sophomore Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) and freshman Phil Schaefer (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) each scored four goals, but No. 6 Stevens earned a 22-12 victory over the Hawks on Wednesday at De Baun Athletic Complex. The loss is the third straight for Hartwick (5-5, 0-3 Empire 8) to a team in the USILA Top 20.

Seniors Ian Skudin (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) and Dave Aitchison (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) combined for two goals and five assists on the day for the Hawks. Brian Finnegan (East Northport, NY/Northport) and Joe Shields (Loudonville, NY/Shaker) added the other Hartwick tallies.

The Ducks jumped out to a 4-0 lead midway through the first period. The Hawks, however, outscored the hosts 2-1 in the final 4:46 of the quarter and they trailed 5-2 after 15 minutes.

The Hawks rallied in the second quarter as Schaefer, Hughes, and Finnegan registered goals in the opening 5:10 of the period to tie the score at 5-5. Stevens took advantage of Hartwick penalties for a pair of man-up goals and the Ducks would tally a total of five times in a 2:01 span to open up a 10-5 edge.

Later in the second, three straight goals from Hughes in two minutes, 12 seconds cut the deficit to two, 10-8, before Stevens added another tally to lead 11-8 at the half.

The Ducks would tack on three straight scores to start the second half and they outscored the Hawks 5-2 for a 15-10 lead heading into the final period. After starting the fourth with their 16th goal, Skudin drew the Hawks to within five again, 16-11. But that was as close as Hartwick would get as the hosts would score six of the game's final seven goals.

The Ducks outshot 'Wick 63-25 in the game and held a 39-23 edge in ground balls. They also won 28 out of 38 of the day's face-offs.

Matt Varney (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) registered a team-best five ground balls for the Hawks. James Curcio (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) added four ground balls and he caused a game-high four Stevens turnovers. Hartwick keeper Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) stopped 14 Duck shots.

Rich Dupras led Stevens with seven points on five goals and two assists. Christian Saley scored a game-high six goals and Christian Laurita, Brandon Faubert, and Alex Hofrichter each scored three times. Goalie Eric Yando made nine saves in the Duck cage and Michael Steinhaus won 23 face-offs and grabbed a game-high 13 ground balls.

The Hawks return home to play Nazareth on Saturday, April 9. The Hawks and Golden Flyers play at 4:00 p.m.
