#8 NYIT Rallies from 5 Down to Edge Dominican

Old Westbury, NY (4/6/11) -- #8 NYIT rallied from a 13-12 deficit with a five-goal fourth period to defeat the visiting Chargers of Dominican this afternoon in an ECC game at President's Stadium. With the loss, Dominican falls to 2-8 overall and 1-4 in conference play, while the Bears improve to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the ECC.

Senior midfielder Alex Jones (St. Albert, AB, Canada) led Dominican with four goals and two assists for six points.

Korin Pierce (Middleburg, VA), Andrew Rendine (River Edge, NJ) and Thomas Dertinger (Nanuet, NY) each netted two points in the loss, while Jones, Dertinger and Jesse Peterson (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada) tallied two assists a-piece.

The first period saw a total of nine goals scored as NYIT netted the first two to go ahead, 2-0. Dominican charged back with four consecutive goals, spanning a period of about four and a half minutes to take a 4-2 lead. Dertinger started the run with back-to-back goals within 45 seconds of each other as Peterson assisted on the first goal.

Attacker Connor Lawlor (Neptune City, NJ) put DC up 3-2 with his fifth goal of the season off the pass from senior Dave Marrese (St. Albert, AB, Canada). Jones gave Domincian a two goal advantage with his first goal of the game off assist from Dertinger to make the score 4-2.

A Bears goal with 3:11 left to play in the first period brought them within a goal (4-3), but Dominican closed out first period scoring with two straight goals off the sticks of Pierce and Jones with assists going to Peterson and Dertinger for a 6-3 lead.

Dominican closed out a 4-0 run with the first two goals of the second period as Jones netted an unassisted goal and Peterson scored his 16th goal of the season after a pass from Lawlor to give the Chargers an 8-3 lead. NYIT scored a goal to cut the deficit in half, 8-4, with 10:04 to play.

Dominican went on another back-to-back goal run 3:46 later as senior attacker Andrew Rendine (River Edge, NJ) scored his first goal of the game off the assist from Pierce and freshman Collin Madsen (Salt Lake City, UT) netted a man-up goal onthe assist by Jones to make the score 10-4 with 5:39 left before halftime. Two Bears goals made the score 10-6 at the break.

NYIT continued on their run with the first two goals of the third period to pull within two goals, 10-8. Rendine netted his second goal of the game after a pass from Jones to give Dominican a three goal lead, 11-8 with 6:56 to play in the third period. The Bears went on a 3-0 run to tie the contest at 12-12. With 2:35 to play in the third, Jones regained a 13-12 lead for Dominican with his fourth goal of the game.

The Bears accounted for all of the scoring in the final period, netting five goals to rally to an 18-12 victory.

Senior goalie Brendan Bonacum (Port Jefferson Station, NY) made nine saves in the loss.
