Mathews Saves 15 as Wesley Downs Marymount
DOVER, Del. - Goalkeeper Sean Mathews (Baltimore, Pa./Pennsbury) made 15 saves as the Wesley College defense limited Marymount to just three goals in a 7-3 triumph in CAC action.
The senior added nine ground balls and three caused turnovers in the game. The three goals allowed was the best by a Wolverine team since March of 2008, a span of 50 games,
The Wolverines (5-8, 2-4 CAC) led 3-1 at the half in a defensive battle, but the Saints (2-11, 0-5 CAC) scored two quick goals to tie things at 3-3 with 8:22 left in the third period after an unassisted tally by Jeff Cook.
Eric Crumbock (Levittown, Pa./Truman) took a feed from Joe Trezza (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) with 4:00 minutes left and found the back of the net to give Wesley a one goal lead through three periods of action.
Justin D'Alonzo (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) scored two of his four goals in third quarter and Tim Dougherty (Cape May Court House, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) got on the scoresheet as well as the Wolverines put the game away in the fourth quarter.
Michael McQuarrie (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) won 10 of 14 face offs for the Wolverines. He also had five ground balls.
Scott Brozey (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) had a goal and an assist.
In addition to a goal by Cook, Andrew Gaston and Willard Humphries both scored for Marymount.
Ross Fernandez stopped five shots and added five ground balls.
Wesley held a 35-27 advantage on ground balls.
