Mount Saint Vincent Outgunned at Kean

Union, N.J. -- For the second time this season, a member of Mount Saint Vincent team matched the single-game goal record, but eight tallies from Erin Woerner (Kings Point, N.Y.) were not enough, as the Dolphins fell at league rival Kean on Thursday by a score of 24-14. Woerner was one of just four goal scorers on the night for the Mount who dropped its third straight contest.

The two teams played a tight first six minutes, with Kean holding a 4-2 lead after a Julie Knodt goal with 24:22 left in the first period. Weorner would go on to bring the Mount even at 4-4 with back-to-back markers as she scored the Dolphins' first six goals of the contest.

Following Woerner's fourth goal of the game, Kean went on a four goal run to open its largest lead of the game to that point. Mount Saint Vincent would cut its deficit to two after a Lauren Perla (Holbrook, N.Y.) goal with 4:30 left before the half, but the Cougars scored four of the final goals of the frame in the final 3:48 to carry a 13-8 lead into the intermission.

Erica Kelly pushed the Kean lead to 14-8 just 1:12 into the second half, before the Dolphins ripped off four straight goals to get to within 14-12 with just under 21 minutes left in regulation. Jessie Mitchell (Suffern, N.Y.) keyed the run with a pair of goals, with Woerner and Nicole Flores (Bethpage, N.Y.) adding the other markers.

The six goal deficit the Cougars built would prove to be too much for the Dolphins, as they answered the Dolphins run with 10 of the final 12 goals, including seven straight over nearly seven minutes late in the second half. Stephanie Tocko led Kean over that stretch with four goals.

Kean outshot Mount Saint Vincent on the night 39-33 and also held the advantage in groundballs at 24-13 and in draw controls at 22-18. Turnovers were even at 15-15 for the game, with the Dolphins scoring on two free position chances and Kean converting on three.

Woerner led the offensive attack with her eight points in the game and also added a draw control for the Mount. Mitchell finished with five points on three goals and a pair of assists. She also led all players with nine draw controls and three caused turnovers and matched the game-high with four groundballs.

Flores finished the night with a pair of goals and five draw controls to go along with three groundballs. Perla finished with a goal and an assist and a draw control for the Dolphins.

Kean was paced by five goals each from Lyndsey Cannon and Tocko, with Cannon totaling seven points after adding two assists. Erika Kelly scored three times as the Cougars had six players with at least two goals. Jules Kelley made 10 saves in goal to pick up the win for Kean.

The 24 goals allowed is a season-high for Mount Saint Vincent and the loss drops it to 4-5 overall on the season and to 3-3 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will look to get back into the win column on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Wesley for a non-conference contest. Opening Draw with the Wolfpack in Dover, Del. is set for 1:00 p.m.
