Clarkson Knocks off No. 15 Rensselaer

Potsdam, NY - Just a week ago, a three-game losing streak had Clarkson University reeling, but the Golden Knights have responded with a three-game winning streak, none bigger than Friday's 11-10 victory over 15th-ranked Rensselaer at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers fell to 7-3 and 2-2 in league games. Clarkson has a key conference game against St. Lawrence next Wednesday.

Rensselaer jumped out to a two-goal lead early, but Clarkson was up to the challenge and nearly matched the Engineers' offensive output of the first quarter as the two teams combined for nine goals. The offensive pace slowed in the second as Clarkson's defense settled in and a Devin Arnold goal in the waning moments of the frame gave RPI a 6-5 advantage at halftime.

The Knights recorded four consecutive goals in the first six-plus minutes of the second half to take a lead they would never relinquish, with three of those scores came from junior Eric Gollands (Chelmsford, MA). More importantly, sophomore Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) overcame a shaky first period to backstop the Knights' defense, making 17 saves on the final 22 RPI shots on the Clarkson goal.

In the fourth quarter, RPI scored three goals in 90 seconds to tie the score 10-10 as the Engineers tossed 16 shots, with 12 on goal. However, an unassisted score from sophomore Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY) with 4:41 remaining proved to be all Clarkson would need in the final period to hold off the Engineers.

Cole finished with 19 saves on 29 shots on goal as RPI held a 46-33 edge in shots and a 29-19 advantage in groundballs.

Gollands finished with three goals and an assist, and McCabe produced three goals as well. Five other players scored a goal for the Knights, with Tyler Long (Liverpool, NY) adding in a pair of assists to go along with his score. Senior Jon Furgal (New Hartford, NY) and freshman Dylan Caldiero (Buffalo, NY) each recorded six groundballs for Clarkson.

For RPI, Nick Billy led all scorers with four goals and Devin Arnold added a pair of goals. Grant Foulsham was among four other players to record a goal for the Engineers and he also assisted on two goals for RPI. Brian Larkin won 56 percent of his faceoff attempts and had a game-best eight groundballs. Andrew Liptak also had a pair of assists and scooped up seven groundballs for the Engineers. James Manchester made six saves in the RPI goal.

TROY, N.Y. Seven different players scored, led by three goals and an assist from Eric Gollands, as the Clarkson University men's lacrosse team held on late for an 11-10 Liberty League victory over #15 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). The Golden Knights move to 6-4 and 2-0 in conference play, while the Engineers slip to 7-3 overall with a 2-2 league mark.

The Engineers opened the game's scoring, jumping out to a 2-0 advantage behind goals from sophomores Wes Rudy (Doylestown, PA/The Hill School) and Brett Overend (Laguna Hills, CA/Laguna Hills) through the first four minutes.

Clarkson's Brendan Shearin (Goffstown, NH/Goffstown) closed the gap at 11:03, but RPI senior Nick Billy (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) capitalized on the man-up with 9:44 remaining for a 3-1 lead. Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) kept the Knights close, scoring at 7:29, but Billy once again found the back of the net with his second straight to regain at 4-2 edge for the visitors with 4:20 on the clock.

The home team benefited from McCabe's persistence once more as he tallied with 2:38 left, and John Devine (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) pulled the Knights even at 4-all on the man-up at 1:09. Despite the momentum, Billy was able to give RPI back the lead with his third of the game with 31 seconds left in the quarter.
