Fifth-Ranked Cortland Coasts by Brockport
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Fifth-ranked Cortland outscored Brockport 6-0 in the first quarter, and Red Dragons defeated the Golden Eagles, 16-6, in a SUNYAC contest under the lights at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. Cortland ups its record to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the league. Brockport falls to 3-6 and 0-2.
Thirteen Cortland players scored at least one goal, led by senior Chris DeLuca's (Sayville) three tallies. Freshman Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) scored twice, while junior Greg Wright (Irondequoit/West Irondequoit) and senior Jay DiStefano (Huntington/Harborfields) finished with a goal and two assists.
Wright reached the career 100-point mark with his three points in the contest and now has 47 goals and 53 assists for 100 points in three seasons. He reached the plateau with a goal late in the third quarter.
Brendon Rothfuss (Webster/Webster Thomas) led Brockport with two goals and one assist and Nate Thomas (Cortland) scored twice.
Cortland used four goalies in the contest. Scott Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) did not make any saves in 18:52. Mike Kaminski (Sayville) stopped two shots and allowed one goal in 16:15 and Kyle Gaebel (Deferiet/Carthage) made one save and allowed three goals in 11:52. Nick Costabile (New Fairfield, CT) played the last 13:01 and recorded three saves while not being scored upon.
Brockport goalie Kyle Crosley (Clinton/Homer) made 12 saves and gave up 14 goals in 45 minutes. Cory Banwaree (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) played the fourth quarter and registered four saves.
Eric Parah (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker), Pat Hayes (Mastic/Eastport South Manor) and DiStefano all scored in the game's first 1:42 to give Cortland a 3-0 lead. Brian Winterfeldt (Merrick/Calhoun), Eric Richards (Skaneateles) and Slavik also scored in the opening quarter.
Rothfuss scored the first two goals of the second quarter to draw Brockport within 6-2, but Slavik started a 5-0 Cortland run that pushed the lead to 11-2. The Red Dragons led 12-3 at halftime and 14-5 after three quarters.
Cortland will play at Nazareth on Monday, April 11, at 4:00 p.m. in makeup of a game that was postponed on March 23.
