Southern Maine Overcomes Salem State

SALEM, Mass. -- Trailing 4-1 at halftime, the University of Southern Maine Huskies exploded for 10 straight goals in the second half and went on to defeat the Salem State University Vikings, 12-5, in a Little East Conference men's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The win snapped a four-game losing skid for the Huskies who improve to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Vikings had their four-game winning streak stopped and fall to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in conference games.

Down by three at the start of the third quarter, the Huskies outscored the Vikings 5-0 in the period to assume a 6-4 lead. Junior Kayle Hamilton (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) ignited the outburst with a pair of goals. Senior Tim Bryant (Peterborough, N.H./ConVal) would net the next three over a seven-minute span.

The goals kept coming for the Huskies in the fourth quarter as they found the net five more times in the opening seven minutes to widen their advantage to 11-4. Junior Kyle Baker (Kennebunk, Maine), Bryant, junior Nate Prince (West Gardiner, Maine), and sophomores Marc Stannard (Wilder, Vt./Hartford) and Mike Orlando (Hanover, Mass.) put shots past Salem State senior goalie Brendan Gill (Chelmsford, Mass.).

Bryant finished with a game-high four goals to pace the Huskies' offense. Hamilton had two goals, Baker and Prince each had a goal and an assist, and sophomore Mark White (Oakville, Ontario) passed out three assists. Sophomore goalie Kyle Dussault (Lewiston, Maine) stopped 10 shots. Freshman Zach Blauvelt (Lewiston, Maine) was outstanding at the X winning 15 of 18 faceoffs.

Sophomore Ryan Gendreau (Danvers, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham) scored three times in the first half to help the Vikings build their lead. Senior Rob Mulroy (Swampscott, Mass./Pingree) had the other two Viking goals. Gill finished the game making 19 saves as the Huskies outshot the Vikings 50-24.

Southern Maine hits the road on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game at Colby College. Salem State will host M.I.T. in a non-league match on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.).
