Warriors Falls as Manhattanville Rallies for Win

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. Junior Grace Gargiulo (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) and sophomore Brooke Strausser (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser Area) each scored four goals for Lycoming, but Manhattanville scored 12 times in the second half to come-from-behind for a 15-12 Middle Atlantic Conference win on Saturday, April 9 at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

Gargiulo moved into eighth place in the school's single-season history with 47 goals this year while Strausser tied her career high for the third straight game with four goals and an assist. The Warriors (1-9 overall, 1-5 MAC) also got three goals from freshman Ashley Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) and one from senior Meagan Pittius (Sparta, N.J./Sparta).

The Warriors took the lead just 45 seconds into the game off one of Gargiulo's goals, all of which came on free position attempts. The Valiants (5-4 overall, 4-3 MAC) scored the next two goals, thanks to tallies from Jen Ascencio, but the Warriors responded with four of the next five goals to take a 5-3 lead into halftime, Strausser and Gargiulo alternated a pair of goals each, with Gargiulo scoring off a free-position attempt with 34 seconds left to give the Warriors a two-goal advantage.

The Warriors took a three-goal lead early in the second half, as Strausser found Pittius for a nice goal within 10 yards, but Manhattanville fought back with six of the next eight goals to take a 9-7 lead. The Warriors fought back to tie the game, as Strausser and Landis each scored to make it 9-9 with 19:27 left.

However, the Valiants went on another 6-1 run to take a 15-10 lead with 3:15 left. The Warriors wrapped up the game with a pair of goals in the last 15 seconds, as Landis and Gargiulo each scored to make up the final three-goal margin.

Gargiulo posted five groundballs and six draw controls to lead the Warriors and Strausser added four groundballs and four draw controls. Senior Kate Isennock (Sparks, Md./Hereford) picked up two groundballs and three draw controls.

Cassandra Honovich and Ascencio each posted four goals and Darby Webber, Emelda Ogweta and Mellisa Goncalves all had two goals and an assist each. Goncalves also posted five groundballs and two caused turnovers and Ogweta also added four groundballs.

Kirsten Betsill earned the win in goal for the Valiants, allowing 12 goals and making 13 saves. Junior Kristina Maurer (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Marian Catholic) posted seven saves for the Warriors.

The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, April 13, when they head to Misericordia for a 4:00 p.m. Middle Atlantic Conference game.
