Privateers Score Late for Thrilling Victory Over Kean

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 9, 2011) Just like a week ago, Maritime scored a late goal to break a tie and win, as this time senior Alexander Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) sent a shot past the Kean goalie, Lane Zierten, off a great pass by classmate Jesse deBoer (Ridge, N.Y./McGann Mercy) with 1:10 to play to give the Privateers a 7-6 lead. The defense stepped up, stopping two late efforts by the Cougars, to secure the victory, Maritime's fifth-straight and sixth in the last seven games.

The win evens the Privateers' record at 6-6 overall, after starting the season 0-5, and also keeps the squad in first place in the Skyline Conference with a perfect 4-0 record. Kean falls to 7-4 (2-1 Skyline). The game was scoreless at halftime, as neither team found the back of the net on a combined 26 shots in the first two quarters.

deBoer had a team-high three points in the game on two assists and one goal in the third quarter. Senior Michael Hanratty (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) scored twice for Maritime, opening both the third and fourth quarters with goals. Four players picked up a team-high four ground balls: Hanratty and classmates Andrew Marklin (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East), TJ Beaudette (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) and Keith Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville). Messina was strong in goal for the Privateers, making nine saves for the win, while Beaudette recorded a game-high four caused turnovers.

Maritime got on the board first, as Hanratty scored at 12:28 of the third quarter. Kean scored two quick goals by freshman Richard Cheifitz and sophomore Brad Mills to take a 2-1 lead, but Maritime responded with four straight goals by sophomore Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore), senior Ryan Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) from deBoer, deBoer unassisted and Hanratty from senior Seth Collins (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) to get out to a 5-2 lead.

Kean scored once more on a goal by Cheifitz, his second of the game, at 11:41 of the fourth quarter to come within 5-3. Sophomore Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) scored about two and a half minutes later to make it 6-4. Kean rallied back to tie the game at 6-6 with 4:04 left to play before Maritime ended the momentum with Alex Korb's game-winner.

For Kean, Cheifitz and sophomore Tom Clifford each had a team-high three points Cheifitz on two goals and an assist and Clifford on a goal and two assist. Junior Nick Angrisani scored two goals for the Cougars. In goal, Zierten made 10 saves in the losing effort.

The Privateers return to action on Wednesday, April 13, in the final home game of the 2011 regular season. They will play host to the Montclair State Red Hawks at 7:00 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
