Shenandoah Drops Finale to Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Host Christopher Newport claimed the USA South Conference regular season women's lacrosse championship with a 20-11 victory over visiting Shenandoah Saturday afternoon.

CNU (11-2, 7-0 USA South) will be the No. 1 seed at the upcoming USA South Conference Tournament in Burlington, N.C.

Shenandoah (12-4, 5-2), which would have clinched a share of the title with a win today, will be the No. 3 seed and faces second-seeded Greensboro on Friday at 3:00 in the second semifinal.

Christopher Newport faces Ferrum at 1 in the opening contest of the tournament.

The Captains raced out to a 4-0 lead in the opening five minutes of Saturday's contest before SU was able to get itself back in it by scoring three goals in a 66-second span.

Freshman Samantha Sisson, who led the Hornets with three goals, got the first one with an unassisted goal at 21:35. Sisson fed Sydney Anderson 14 seconds later before Anderson did the same favor for Jennie Ott at 20:29.

After the two teams traded the next two goals, CNU re-asserted control 10-2 run to finish the first half.

The last goal, by Ashton Marshall, made it 15-6 as the two teams headed into the break.

Shenandoah attempted to make things interesting by scoring five of the first seven goals of the second half, but Christopher Newport countered a Hornets press defense with three goals in the final 3:44.

Sisson paced SU with three goals and one assist with Corrinne Kosmowski adding three goals and Anderson two goals and one assist.

CNU outshot Shenandoah 49-24, owned a 23-8 advantage in groundballs and won 18 of 31 draw controls.

Hornets keeper Ashley Cross had a career high 17 saves in the losing effort.
