Hampden-Sydney Starts Hot, Downs Guilford

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team scored eight goals in the first quarter as the Tigers rolled by Guilford College 14-8.

The Tigers wasted little time establishing themselves as the best team on the field, as the Hawthorne Brothers Cole (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) and Jess (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) scored the game's first two goals followed by a score from Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy). Greg Nash put the Quakers on the board at the 9:15 mark, but the Tigers scored the next five goals of the quarter, including two from Eric Gorsline (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy).

H-SC continued to pour on the goals in the second quarter, winning the quarter 4-2 with goals coming from Clarke, Nate Cundy (Midlothian, VA/James River), Bobby Fulton (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan), and a behind-the-back shot from Cole Hawthorne to close out the half with a 12-3 lead.

Guilford made things interesting after intermission as goals from Nash, Chris Sisk, and Chris Ashcraft cut the Hampden-Sydney lead to just 12-6. However, after a Tiger timeout, H-SC quelled the comeback as Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) and Cundy scored the third period's final two goals to put the lead back to 14-6. Taylor Teodioso and Ashcraft scored two fourth quarter goals for Guilford to provide the final 14-8 score.

Brad Mostowy (Atlanta, GA/Trinity Pawling) continued his hot streak on face-offs, winning 14 of 17 along with a career-high 16 ground balls, four caused turnovers, and an assist. Cundy posted a hat-trick with three scores and one assist while Cole Hawthorne and Clarke each added three goals and one assist. Fulton, Jess Hawthorne, and Gorsline each found the back of the net twice while Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) tacked on two assists. Jess Hawthorne also collected five groundballs, and Clarke added four.

Nash and Ashcraft led Guilford with two goals while Henry Farley, Sisk, Teodioso, and Erik Dolliver had one score each. H-SC outshot GC 31-16 and held a commanding 42-21 advantage in groundballs. The Tigers won 19 of the game's 26 face-offs and were 2-3 on extra man opportunities.

Hampden-Sydney travels to Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. ODAC contest.
