Rangers Fend off Royals for First Conference Win
Senior attacker Robert Pantages (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) and sophomore attacker Taylor Nelson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) scored three goals apiece for Scranton, which has had three of its last four games against Drew decided by one goal.
The Royals also received a goal and an assist from junior attacker Daniel Slade (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) and a goal apiece from sophomore midfielder Dillon McInerney (Hawthorne, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and senior midfielder Sean Milde (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury).
After trailing 3-2 at intermission, Pantages and Taylor got the Royals rolling on the offensive end. Pantages scored all three of his goals during a three-minute span of the third period as Scranton took a 5-4 lead, while Nelson scored two quick goals early in the fourth period to give the Royals an 8-6 lead with 11 minutes remaining.
McGowan cut the gap to one with a goal off the second of three assists by freshman attacker Andrew Somps (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) before Tripp tied it up for the final time with a man-up goal with 8:28 left. Della Fera and freshman midfielder Mark Barus (Jacobstown, N.J./Notre Dame) rounded out the game-deciding run with goals with 7:35 and 1:56 remaining, respectively.
Taylor scored his third goal of the fourth period with 29 seconds remaining to set the final score. The Royals did win the face-off after Taylor's goal, but were unable to get off shot attempt on their last possession.
Senior Jeremy Dowiak (Hackettstown, N.J./West Morris) and sophomore Ben Worthington (Jenkintown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) split time evenly in goal for the Royals and combined to stop 16 shots. Junior goalie Charlie DeSocio (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) finished with a game-high 15 saves for Drew.
The Royals will return to Landmark Conference action next Saturday, April 16, against the Crusaders of Susquehanna University at Fitzpatrick Field at 1:00 p.m.
