Golden Flyers Soar Past the Hawks in Empire 8 Play

ONEONTA, NY Nazareth scored the game's first five goals and never looked back in an 11-4 Empire 8 victory over Hartwick on Saturday. The Hawks cut the deficit to four, 8-4, in the third quarter, but the Golden Flyers outscored 'Wick 3-0 in the final period to claim the victory. Hartwick falls to 5-6 overall and 0-4 in Empire 8 Conference play. Naz improves to 8-2 and 4-0 in the conference.

Sophomore Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) paced Hartwick with two goals. Dave Aitchison (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) and Joe Shields (Loudonville, NY/Shaker) each added one and Phil Schaefer (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) notched an assist.

Nate DeLone gave Naz a 2-0 lead 2:45 into the game with a pair of tallies 30 seconds apart. Scott Castle made it 3-0 with 10:45 to play in the first quarter and Joe Jacobs-Ferderbar made the advantage four with 12 seconds left.

Castle gave the visitors a five-goal lead at the 8-minute mark of the second quarter, before Hughes got the Hawks on the board off a feed from Schaefer 4:19 before halftime. At the break, the Hawks held advantages in both shots (17-11) and ground balls (17-11).

The two teams traded goals in the first three and a half minutes of the third quarter. Collin Clark tallied for Naz with Shields scoring for the Hawks.

Later in the period, Jacobs-Ferderbar and DeLone tallied 56 seconds apart to extend the Golden Flyers lead to six, 8-2. The Hawks, however, came right back with consecutive goals from Aitchison and Hughes and they trailed by just four, 8-4, with 6:24 to play in the quarter.

Neither team found the next in the final six minutes of the third, but C.J. Estes scored unassisted 2:21 into the fourth to build the Naz edge back up to five, 9-4. In the final eight minutes, DeLone set up teammate Jon VanOrden and then scored his fourth of the day on the man-up to close out the scoring.

Both teams finished the day with 32 shots. The Hawks held a slight edge in ground balls, 27-26. The Golden Flyers won 10 of 18 face-offs and went 3 for 5 with the extra man on the day.

Schaefer, Aitchison, Alex Skvarch (Syracuse, NY/Marcellus), Matt Varney (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury), and Mike Morrison (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) each secured three ground balls for the Hawks. Both Varney and Morrison won four face-offs and keeper Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) made 10 saves.

DeLone led Naz with four goals and one assist. Jacobs-Ferderbar and Castle each had two tallies and one helper. Kyle McLean recorded the game-high in ground balls with four.

Hartwick is back in action on Tuesday, April 12. The Hawks travel up the road to battle Oneonta State with the opening face-off set for 7:00 p.m.

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth opened a 5-0 lead and went on to defeat Hartwick 11-4 in a men's Empire 8 conference lacrosse game. Junior Nate DeLone (Rush-Henrietta HS/Rochester, NY) recorded four goals and an assist for the Golden Flyers, while seniors Scott Castle (Skaneateles HS/Skaneateles, NY) and Joe Jacobs-Ferderbar (Orchard Park HS/Orchard Park, NY) each added two goals and one assist.

With the victory, Nazareth remains undefeated in conference games with a 4-0 record. The Golden Flyers improve to 8-2 overall with a non-conference game against fifth-ranked Cortland scheduled for Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The Hawks fall to 0-4 in Empire 8 games and drop to 5-6 overall.

DeLone ignited the Golden Flyers with two goals within a 30-second span to give Nazareth a 2-0 lead just 2:45 into the contest. Freshman Trevar Haefele (St. Dominic's Regional/Greene, ME) assisted on DeLone's first goal after an earlier save by sophomore Tim Doyle (Palmyra-Macedon HS/Macedon, NY). After collecting a ground ball following the faceoff, DeLone scored his second goal unassisted.
