Westminster Runs by Fort Lewis in RMLC Opener

SALT LAKE CITY The 10th-ranked Westminster men's lacrosse team defeated Fort Lewis in the RMLC opener for the Griffins 16-2 on Saturday afternoon. Westminster improves to 8-5 overall and 1-0 in the RMLC West while Fort Lewis drops to 4-5 and 1-1.

The game was played in cold temperatures and snow throughout the contest. Westminster jumped out to an early -0 lead with goals from Gian Semxith and Jake Arthur in the first six minutes. After Fort Lewis got to within 2-1 at the 8:04 mark of the first quarter, Westminster posted four consecutive goals into the second quarter to open up a 6-1 advantage.

Fort Lewis would get within 6-2 at the 5:21 mark of the first half, but they wouldn't score again. The Griffins scored the final 10 goals of the game and held Fort Lewis scoreless for the final 35:21.

Westminster controlled the game throughout and finished with a 41-13 advantage in shots attempted. The Griffins put 32 of those shots on cage and forced the visitors into 16 saves. Westminster also collected 51 ground balls to just 24 and won 18 of 22 faceoffs.

Sexsmith finished the afternoon with six points behind three goals and three assists. Josh Condas scored four points by scoring two goals and recording two helpers. Arthur added three goals with Brad Tack and Pace Cranney also scoring two goals apiece. All three Griffin goalies saw time and combined to make nine saves.

Westminster will now take to the road to complete the 2011 season. They begin on Tuesday, April 12 against Utah at McCarthy Field.
