Fitchburg State Tops Westfield State in Overtime

WESTFIELD, Mass. Amanda Burns scored a game-high seven points (6 goals, 1 assist), including the game-winning goal, to lead Fitchburg State to a 14-13 overtime victory over Westfield State on Saturday, April 9.

Fitchburg improves to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance. Westfield is 4-3 and 1-2.

Burns scored with 3:51 remaining in the six-minute overtime stanza to give the Falcons a 13-12 lead; their first lead since 25:52 remaining in the second half.

The Falcons' Avery Nuesch scored an open net goal with 55 seconds remaining in the overtime to make it 14-12. Westfield's Keeley - who tied Burns for game-high honors with six goals - scored with eight seconds remaining.

It was a tale of two halves as Fitchburg jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the game's opening nine minutes with Burns scoring three goals and Samantha Bonasera tallying twice. The Falcons led at halftime 9-4.

The Owls came roaring back in the second half, outscoring the Falcons, 8-3, to send the game into OT.

Westfield went on an 8-1 run to take a 12-10 lead with 14:40 remaining in regulation. Sparking the comeback were Keeley and Maura Stack with three goals apiece.

But the Owls were then held scoreless for more than 20 minutes, including several missed shots in the closing minutes of regulation.

After Westfield took its 12-10 lead, Fitchburg quickly tied it on goals from Jessica Barlett and Tessa Leahy. There was no scoring in the final 11:31 of regulation.

Scoring two goals for Fitchburg were Bartlett and Bonas. Stack and Ari Colella had three and two goals, respectively. Laura Chiricosta had a goal and a game-high three assists.

In key team statistics, Westfield committed 25 turnovers to Fitchburg's 18. The Falcons took the grounders, 31-23.
