High Point Takes NLC Battle at Longwood

For Longwood, Cara O'Brien scored five of the Lancers' seven goals and goalie Juli Liebig made eight saves.

Longwood jumped out to a two-goal lead both on O'Brien scores before the Panthers got on the board with Carroll's first goal of the game. Kuhlman had the ball on the right side and passed it on Carroll in front for the score with 22:32 left in the first half. The Panthers scored the next two goals to take their first lead the first by Chelsea Thompson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) on an assist by Grace Gaeng (Bel Air, Md./The John Carroll School (Maryland)) before Carroll scored her second goal.

Longwood's Kelsey Dean scored with just over 10 minutes left in the first half before the Panthers closed out the period with goals by Gaeng and Carroll to take a 5-3 lead into the break. The Panthers were on the attack in the final minutes as Courtney McLaughlin (Apex, N.C./Apex (North Carolina)) took the ball the length of the field, but HPU's final shot of the half by Christie Dougherty (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) sailed wide.

High Point opened the second-half scoring when Thompson passed the ball from behind the net to a charging Heather Ziccarelli (Rochester, N.Y./Rush Henrietta (Monroe CC)), who shot it past Liebig with 23:30 left in regulation. The Panthers were back on the board just 40 seconds later when Dougherty scored a free-position goal from the top of the arc.

After Longwood's Lauren Prasnicki scored with 21:46 remaining, the Panthers broke it open with four goals in four minutes to take an 11-4 lead. The first came on a free position shot by Jasmine Jordan (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Technical) before Thompson scored two in a row and Carroll scored her fourth goal of the game. Longwood's Cara O'Brien scored to get the Lancers on the board for the first time in 10 minutes, but HPU was right back at it with a Thompson goal assisted by Carroll with 6:06 remaining.

Longwood's O'Brien scored two goals with 1:10 and 0:28 remaining in the game but the Lancers couldn't challenge in the second half.
