First-Half Surge Propels Ithaca Past Hartwick

ONEONTA, NY Hartwick dropped a 16-8 decision to Ithaca in Empire 8 action on Sunday at Wright Stadium. The Hawks played the Bombers to a 3-3 stalemate through the opening 12 minutes of the game, but the Bombers took over in the final 18 minutes, outscoring the Hawks 11-0.

With the loss, Hartwick falls to 5-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Ithaca is now 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the Empire 8.

Freshman Brittany McCabe (Manorville, NY/Eastport South Manor) led Hartwick with four goals and an assist. Sophomore Erin Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) added a pair of tallies. Classmate Emily Walsh (Cortland, NY/Cortland) picked up two assists.

The Bombers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after goals from Emily Finn and Kim Armbruster just 2:02 into the game. The Hawks responded as sophomore Erica Scicchitano (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) scored off a feed from Walsh and Doyle tallied following a pass from McCabe 55 seconds apart to tie the score.

Tracy Rivas gave Ithaca a 3-2 edge with her first of two goals on the afternoon with 19:36 left on the clock, but McCabe came right back for 'Wick with her first of the day 41 ticks later to even the score at 3-3.

One minute, one second later, Michelle Avery gave Ithaca the lead for good as she triggered an 11-0 run to end the first half. Nikki Dahl and Armbruster led the way in the spurt for the Bombers with two goals apiece.

The Hawks played a solid second half, outscoring IC by a 5-2 margin. McCabe and junior Brittany LaVaute (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) opened the half with back-to-back tallies to cut the lead to nine, 14-5. The Bombers would get two more in a 1:47 span to build the lead back up but the Hawks would hold them scoreless over the final 12:55 of the game.

The Hawks trimmed the gap in the final 10 minutes as McCabe netted a pair and Doyle closed out the scoring with 1:26 left.

McCabe, who accounted for nine goals and four assists this weekend, has now reached the 30-goal plateau for the season after just nine games. She becomes the first Hartwick player to hit the 30-goal mark since Kelsey Campbell (48) in 2008.

Hartwick freshman Ali Sisco (Kendall Park, NJ/S. Brunswick) earned game-highs of five ground balls, four caused turnovers, and she tied for a game-best with four draw controls. McCabe grabbed three draws and sophomore Ryan McGovern (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point) caused a pair of IC turnovers. Goalkeeper Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) made 13 saves, tying for a season-high.

Ithaca, which held advantages in shots (33-24), ground balls (14-12), and draws (16-10), was led by Armbruster's three goals and Nicole Borisinok's goal and four assists. Katie Long tied Sisco with four draws and goalie Jess Worthman made 10 saves in the Ithaca cage.

Hartwick (5-4) next plays on Wednesday. The Hawks travel to Hoboken, NJ to face nationally 10th ranked Stevens Institute of Technology.
