Gabbe, Magnone Lead New Haven Over Bentley
WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior attacks Alexis Gabbe and Sarah Magnone each scored six goals to help New Haven to an 18-13 victory over Bentley University in Northeast-10 play Sunday afternoon.
Bentley jumped out to a 4-0 lead after eight minutes, but New Haven used a 7-2 run over the next 14 minutes to take a 7-6 lead. Magnone had four goals during the run and Gabbe had two.
The Chargers then controlled the final five-plus minutes of the first half, scoring four of the last five goals to lead 11-7 at halftime. Only a goal by sophomore Cori Geiger (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) interrupted New Haven's scoring run.
Magnone and Gabbe opened the second half with goals to give New Haven a 13-7 lead, which was followed by sophomore Dovlyn Curtis (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) getting one back for the Falcons.
New Haven built its lead up to seven at 15-8 with 19:58 remaining after back-to-back goals from senior Ashley Ferrandiz and Magnone. From there, Bentley scored three of the next five goals, capped by junior Lauren Canepa's (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) second goal of the game with 7:04 remaining to make it a 17-11 game.
Bentley though went through a nearly five-minute scoring drought, and Gabbe capped her day with her sixth goal with 2:31 left to make it 18-11.
The Chargers improve to 6-5 with the win and go to 4-2 in the NE-10, and Bentley is now 5-6 overall and 3-3 in the NE-10. Their next game is Tuesday night at home against Merrimack.
