Saints Respond, Rallying to Defeat Iona

In desperate need of a conference victory Sunday, the Saints responded. With their backs against the wall, the team rallied from an early deficit and used a big second half to pick up their first MAAC win of the year, defeating Iona 9-6 in New Rochelle.

It was a key victory for the Saints (6-6, 1-2), which needed a win to realistically keep their MAAC tournament hopes alive.

Iona (4-10, 2-2) controlled tempo early and put the Saints on their heels, outshooting Siena 18-5 in the first half. But the Gaels misfired on a number of their shots and thus only led by two goals at the half, 4-2.

In the second half, Siena shook off its sluggish start. After Iona took a 5-3 lead with 25:33 remaining, the Saints responded in a big way. Siena scored five straight goals over a 10:13 span to take an 8-5 lead and put the game away.

Kristin McMillan was at the forefront of the comeback, scoring four times. She scored three of Siena's five goals during that second half spurt, including the go-ahead goal.

Michelle Andreo scored twice including the game-winner, while adding an assist. Deirdre McQuillan contributed a goal and two assists.

Kristin Concordia made five saves in goal and held the Gaels to just one goal over the last 25-plus minutes.

Caitlyn Collins led Iona with two goals and two assists but only put two of her eight shots on goal. Inefficient shooting plagued the Gaels all game long as Iona put just 11 of their 26 shots on goal and misfired on all six of their free-position shots.

The Saints will look to pick up another key conference victory Friday when they host Niagara at 4:00 p.m. at Siena Turf Field.
