Red Hawks Claim Overtime Victory Over Hilbert

PITTSBURGH, PA Hilbert surrendered the tying goal with five seconds left in regulation only to lose in sudden death overtime to La Roche College (10-9) April 9, dropping to 4-4 for the season.

Ryan Wagner (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) led the Hawk offense with 4 goals and got help from Josh Baker (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) and John Jewett (Blasdell, NY/Frontier), who each netted twice for the visitors.

Hilbert played catch-up the entire game watching La Roche score the first two goals within a span of 15 seconds beginning at the 12:26 minute mark. Wagner and Baker gave the Hawks life in the first quarter matching the RedHawk hits.

Before the quarter ended Dustin Reykdal put one past Pat Lunderdman (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) (14 saves) giving the home team a 3-2 advantage. With each team scoring one more goal apiece in the second session, the half time score found La Roche up 4-3.

La Roche (3-4) struck first to start the 3rd, only to have Wagner score back-to-back goals evening the score 5-5. La Roche answered back twice before Jewett and Zitnik scored to tie it up once more. Hilbert took their first lead of the game off a Wagner to Jewett hit at (2:44) left in the fourth quarter.

The home team was down for the first time yet found an answer forty-four seconds later when Crawford Healy scored unassisted at the 2 minute mark. Wagner gave the Hawks their last lead when Nick Kieffer (Lee Center, NY/Rome Free Academy) set him up. The Hawks defense held tight until Reykdal (4 goals) fired one with .05 seconds left to force overtime.

Each team played through sloppy field conditions thorough out the contest only to have Matthew Hamill slip one in for the final (10-9) at the 3:01 mark in sudden death.

Hilbert returns to action April 12, when they travel to Wells College for a 4:00 pm toss. The Hawks host their official home opener on campus against Morrisville State on April 14.
