Oswego Comes Back for OT Win over Potsdam

OSWEGO, N.Y. - Rachael Raffa scored on a free position shot with 1:34 remaining in overtime to complete a 13-12 come-from-behind victory for Oswego State against Potsdam on Tuesday afternoon at South Athletic Field.

The Lakers trailed 7-2 two minutes into the second half before ripping off seven straight goals before the Bears scored the final two goals in regulation to force overtime. Oswego State earned its first SUNYAC win of the season for a mark of 1-2 and improved to 4-3 overall. Potsdam dropped to 4-8 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

Raffa paced the Laker offense with four goals and two assists followed closely by Erin Cummings, who finished with four goals and an assist. The Bears were led by Carly Richards' six points (five goals, one assist) and Maribeth Simmons' four goals and one assist.

With the score even at one goal apiece ten minutes into the first half, Potsdam's offense produced four straight free position goals to take a 5-1 lead with five minutes to play in the frame. Raffa scored the first of her four goals at 27:51 to send Oswego State into intermission trailing by three goals. The Laker defense kept the score lower than it could have been as the Bears dominated possession time in the frame.

Carly Richards scored two quick goals in the first two minutes of the second half to give Potsdam a commanding 7-2 lead. However, Cummings started the comeback for the Lakers with her first goal of the game 3:23 into the period. The goal triggered seven consecutive goals by the home team with markers from Cummings, Kristen Darcy, Stephanie Cronk, and Raffa, giving Oswego State a 9-7 lead.

The Bears tied the game up with two minutes remaining in regulation after a pair of quick goals by Richards and Aubrey Macintosh. The Lakers won the ensuing draw control, and proceeded to score 18 seconds later when Kaila Curatalo put away a pass from Cummings. Potsdam scored on the next series to level the score again in the final minute to send the game into overtime.

The Bears had two free position shots in the first three minutes of overtime, but Oswego State goalie Ashlee Engel was up to the test stopping both scoring chances. In the last two minutes of the first overtime, both squads traded goals in a flurry with four goals being scored, including another goal by Richards with 20 seconds on the clock to set up a second overtime.

Potsdam gained and maintained control of the ball for the majority of the first three minutes of sudden death overtime, but the Laker defense was able to keep the Bear offense from getting a good look at the net.

When the last three minutes started, Raffa won a critical draw control and carried the ball into the offensive zone. Potsdam committed three fouls before setting up Raffa's final free position attempt. Her shot with 1:34 left on the clock just got past Potsdam goalie Kaci Milligan to end the game.

Engel ended the game with nine saves and seven goals allowed in the final 45:56 after she relieved Nicole Nalle, who finished with two saves and five goals in the first 24:30. Both goalies defended free position shots well, as Potsdam was 5 for 16. In comparison, Oswego State was 3 for 7. Milligan suffered the loss after making 13 saves.

The Lakers will host non-conference Morrisville Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
