No. 5 Cortland Nets 13 Straight to Down Oswego

CORTLAND, N.Y. Fifteen different players scored goals as fifth-ranked Cortland ran away with a 23-5 victory versus Oswego Wednesday afternoon in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons improved to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference, while the Lakers fell to 5-6 and 0-3.

Junior Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) led the way for Cortland with three goals and two assists. Junior Greg Wright (Irondequoit/West Irondequoit) recorded two goals and two assists, Chris DeLuca (Sayville) had two goals and one assist and senior Jay DiStefano (Huntington/Harborfields) and freshmen Dominic Darcangelo (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker), Mark Panneton (Niskayuna) and Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) each scored twice. Darcangelo's goals were the first of his career.

Senior Neal Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena) contributed one goal and three assists, and senior Eric Martin (Fairport) and freshman Matt DiMarco (Liverpool) tallied one goal and one assist each. Five other players scored once, including freshman Cody Consul (Webster/Webster Schroeder), who netted the first of his career. Senior Justin Battino (Plainview) won 14 of 16 faceoffs and recorded a game-high eight ground balls. Senior Nick Jarvis (Syracuse/Onondaga Central) won 8 of 9 faceoffs, while DeLuca was successful on 4 of 5 attempts. Cortland won 27 of 31 as a team.

Freshman Scott Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) started in goal for the Red Dragons and made three saves in 23 minutes, 36 seconds. Sophomore Mike Kaminski (Sayville) took over and stopped one shot in 17:45, followed by freshman Nick Costabile (New Fairfield, CT), who also made one save in 11:48. Junior Kyle Gaebel (Deferiet/Carthage) played the final 6:51, turning aside one shot.

Junior Britt Leone (Schenectady) led Oswego with two goals. Junior Andy Lever (Lindenhurst) added a goal and an assist, and senior Pat Decker (Spencerport) and junior Andy Williams (Hamburrg/Eden) netted one goal apiece. Junior Casey Balzer (Nassau/Columbia) and sophomore Mark Briggs (Marietta/Tully) chipped in with one assist each. Junior Ian O'Brien (Gansevoort/Saratoga Springs) and freshman Tyler Trueman (Ithaca) split time in the cage with O'Brien making five saves and Trueman stopping six shots. Senior Eric Zerrahn (Oswego) recorded a game-high five caused turnovers.

After Decker gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead just 1:01 into the game, the Red Dragons responded with the next 13 goals -- nine to close out the first quarter and the first four of the second quarter. DeLuca, DiStefano and Slavik each scored twice during the run, and Hopps collected two of his assists. Leone ended the streak with a goal at 6:24 of the second and Cortland led, 13-2, at the half.

The Red Dragons then completely dominated the third quarter in sealing the win. Cortland outscored the Lakers, 8-0, out shot Oswego, 14-0, and won all eight faceoffs in the stanza. Tota, Wright and Panneton netted two goals apiece. Oswego outscored Cortland, 3-2, over the final 15 minutes for the final of 23-5.

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Pat Decker put Oswego State ahead early, but No. 5 Cortland rattled off 13 straight goals in the first and second quarters to hand the Lakers a 23-5 loss on a rainy Wednesday afternoon in Cortland.

Britt Leone led Oswego State with two goals, while Andy Lever added a goal and an assist. The Lakers, who are 5-6 overall and 0-3 in the league, host Oneonta Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The win pushed the Red Dragons to 8-2 on the season and 3-0 in the SUNYAC standings.

Decker tallied his ninth goal of the season 1:01 into the contest, but the score appeared to wake a sleeping giant as Cortland responded with 13 consecutive goals from ten different players. Leone stopped the string with his tenth goal of the year with 6:24 to play in the first half. The Red Dragons took a 13-2 lead into the break, as they outshot Oswego State 30-8 in the two quarters.
