Robert Morris Scores 10 of Final 11 to Defeat Canisius

Robert Morris controlled the final 40 minutes of the game against Canisius College , scoring 10 of the final 11 goals to earn a 14-5 victory at the Demske Sports Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The loss drops the Griffs to 2-7 on the season, while Robert Morris improves to 6-5.

Senior Nick LoCoco (Cicero, N.Y.) led the Griffs with three points on the afternoon, scoring one goal and adding two assists. Juniors Mike Albert (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Brandon Bortignon (Coquitlam, British Columbia) both scored their first collegiate goals, while senior Greg Michael (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and junior Brendan O'Hagan (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for Canisius with one tally each.

Senior Dan Coates (St. Catharines, Ontario) and junior Sean Callahan (Orchard Park, N.Y.) anchored the Canisius defensive effort. Coates tallied career highs with seven ground balls and five caused turnovers, while Callahan recorded 11 stops in goal, his third-straight game with double-digit saves.

Canisius started the contest strong, scoring the first two goals of the game. LoCoco set up Michael and Bortignon for two tallies in the first seven minutes as the Griffs grabbed the early advantage.

Robert Morris responded with four-straight goals for a 4-2 lead only to see Canisius answer back and tie the game. LoCoco scored an unassisted goal with 1:15 left in the first quarter and O'Hagan then followed 2:12 into the second to knot the game at four.

The Colonials, however, controlled most of the remainder of the game to earn the victory. Robert Morris scored the final three goals of the first half including two in the final 90 seconds and then netted the first seven tallies of the second half for a 14-4 lead en route to the victory. After Canisius tied the game, the Colonials won nine of the next 10 faceoffs to dominate possession and build their advantage.

Canisius outshot Robert Morris, 35-32, in the game but the Colonials fired 25 shots on goal compared to 11 for the Griffs. Trevor Moore led Robert Morris with seven goals, while Charles Ruppert recorded five saves to earn the victory.

The Griffs return to MAAC play on Saturday, squaring off with Detroit. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.

Game Notes: The five caused turnovers by Coates are the most by a Griff since Matt Barkas also recorded five on March 14, 2009 against Marist ... Robert Morris' Moore is the first player to score seven goals against Canisius since Siena's Scott Herbst on April 26, 2002 ... The Colonials have won the last two games in the series after Canisius won the first five meetings between the two schools ... Canisius was without its starting face-off specialist, Justin Maderer, for the game.

Buffalo, N.Y. April 13, 2011 Senior captain Trevor Moore (Port Coquitlam, BC/Western Reserve Academy) delivered one of the best offensive performances in school history Wednesday afternoon as he broke a single-game school record by tallying seven goals in leading Robert Morris to a 14-5 rout of host Canisius in the Colonials' final non-conference contest of the season at the Demske Sports Complex.

Moore, who entered the week ranked first nationally in goals per game, certainly did not take a breather after Saturday as he recorded his second consecutive seven-point game and now owns four games in his career in which he has hit at least that figure, a school record. His final score of the day broke his single-season career high and moved him into a tie for second place all-time in single-season goals scored at Robert Morris (36).
