Bearcats Cruise to Victory Over the Presidents
LATROBE, Pa. -- Saint Vincent scored the first four goals and never looked back in defeating Washington & Jefferson 13-3 on Wednesday afternoon in men's lacrosse action.
The Bearcats (9-3) have won five of their last six games, while W&J has dropped four in a row. SVC has defeated the Presidents three-straight times.
Will Delanoy had a hand in three of the Bearcats' first four goals, scoring once and setting up two others for a 4-0 lead at the 4:19 mark.
W&J ended its scoring drought 44 seconds before halftime as sophomore attacker Joseph Eck (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) found the back of the net off a pass from classmate Tom Kozlowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler).
However, Jake Dick netted the only two goals of the second quarter for a 6-1 SVC halftime lead and Ryan Kearny scored twice in the first six minutes of the third to stretch the lead to 8-1. The Bearcats netted the final four goals of the game after W&J closed to within 9-3 early in the fourth quarter.
Kearny finished with five goals, while Delanoy collected five points (1 goal, 4 assists). Adam Gunter earned the win in goal after making eight saves. Saint Vincent owned a 45-22 shot advantage and was successful on 21 of 22 clear attempts.
Eck led the W&J offense with two goals, while junior midfielder Sean Hipley (Baltimore, Md./Towson Catholic) fired in the only other Presidents' goal in the fourth period. Eck had seven of W&J's 22 shots. Sophomore goalie Ran Kirby (Cleveland, Ohio/University School) finished with 13 saves.
Washington & Jefferson travels to Greenville, Pa., on Saturday for the first-ever meeting with Thiel. The Tomcats, who are competing in their first NCAA Division III varsity season, lost to Saint Vincent 29-1 two weeks ago.
