Hampden-Sydney Uses Big Q2 to Top Virginia Wesleyan

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team was down 3-1 late in the first, but a six goal second frame keyed a 12-9 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Virginia Wesleyan College.

Jess Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) found the back of the net at the 11:12 mark, and VWC's Mike Connors scored just seven seconds later to even up the game. Brock Waddell scored with 6:36 to go in the quarter, and Adam Nycz added the third score at the 3:42 mark. Nate Cundy (Midlothian, VA/James River) put an end to the Marlins run and started the game changing Tigers run, scoring at 2:07 to make it a 3-2 Virginia Wesleyan lead after 15 minutes of play.

Hampden-Sydney's Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) and Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) went on a 4-0 spurt over the first eight minutes of the second quarter with each contributing two goals to put the Tigers up 6-3 with 7:08 left in the first half. Nycz and Waddell scored back-to-back goals over the next two minutes to cut the Tiger lead to 6-5. A flurry of scoring would take place with less than two minutes remaining. Ryan Martin (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) deposited a goal at 1:48, and Cundy added a score with 52 ticks left on the clock to give the Tigers an 8-5 lead, but the Marlins Ian Shankland added a goal with only 12 seconds to go to make it an 8-6 game at intermission.

Keller and Shankland each traded a goal to bring the score to 9-7 at the 8:16 mark of the third quarter, but Cundy torched the net at 7:09 and 4:49 to put Hampden-Sydney up 11-7 going into the fourth quarter. Travis Pulls trimmed the H-SC lead down to three just 19 seconds into the final frame. The Marlins would be held in check by the Tiger defense to prevent any hopes of a comeback. Mavromatis would score with 5:26 remaining and Puls pocketed another goal with 34 seconds left.

Cundy scored four goals while Mavromatis and Keller each had three scores and one assist. Cole Hawthorne distributed three helpers, Martin contributed a score and an assist, and Jess Hawthorne produced one goal. Brad Mostowy (Atlanta, GA/Trinity Pawling) continued his dominance on face-offs, winning 14 of 23 attempts while racking up 11 ground balls. Nate Norbo (Waterford, VA/Loudon Valley) led all defenders with four groundballs, and Cody Hornung (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Lower Merion) made 11 saves.

Waddell, Shankland, Nycz, and Puls each had two goals for the Marlins while Andrew Adamson had two assists. Tyler Keech made 12 saves and Connors scooped eight ground balls. H-SC was nearly flawless on clears, converting on 15 of 16 attempts while having a 29-21 edge in ground balls. Hampden-Sydney outshot Virginia Wesleyan 36-29 and won 15 of 24 face-offs.

Hampden-Sydney travels to Salem, VA, on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. contest against #8 ranked Roanoke College.
