Saporito Scores Five as Privateers Sail Past Gators

TROY, N.Y. (April 13, 2011) - Maritime defeated Sage College,13-4, on the road Wednesday afternoon at Renwyck Field on the campus of RPI. The Privateers improve to 2-9 overall (1-6 Skyline) with the victory, while the Gators fall to 0-6 (0-6 Skyline).

Junior Catherine Brady (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) started things up for the Privateers, as she opened the score sheet when less than five minutes had gone by in the contest. Junior Ginelle Butler was able to tie the score for the Gators, before Maritime opened up the game with three straight goals by junior Kristen Saporito (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) followed by two straight by senior Jill Davenport (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), all in the first half. Butler tallied two goals in a row for Sage to leave the scoreboard, 6-3, at the half.

The second half started with the Privateers netting six straight, including a career-first for freshman Giuliana Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y./Academy of Mount St. Ursula), who scored when the clock signaled ten minutes remaining. Sophomore Erika Jackson was able to send the ball past the goalie one more time for Sage, before Brady scored the final goal of the game to make it 13-4.

Saporito led Maritime by tallying five goals, three groundballs and controlling six draws. Davenport also contributed five points on four scores and one assist, while grabbing three groundballs and winning two draws. Brady sparked the Privateers, as she netted three, but also was determinant on defense, as she had team-highs in groundballs (8), caused turnovers (3) and draws controlled (7). Sophomore goalie Courtney Marietta (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) had nine saves and one groundball in the winning effort.

For the Gators, Butler rounded her three-goal performance with two groundballs and one caused turnover. Senior goalie Brittany Schaffer took the loss despite making twelve stops and picking one groundball.

The Privateers will return home on Saturday, April 16, as they host Skyline Conference foe Mount Saint Mary in their final game of the season, which will also be Senior Day for Maritime. The game is set to start at 1:00 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
