Westfield State Stops Western Connecticut State

WESTFIELD, Mass. Carly Keeley (3 goals, 3 assists) and Ari Colella (4 goals, 1 assist) scored six and five points, respectively, and goalie Jill Robinson recorded 12 saves, including 10 in the second half, to lead Westfield State to a 13-10 victory over Western Connecticut State in a non-league women's lacrosse game Thursday evening, April 14. Westfield's record is 6-3; Western Connecticut is 5-5.

Colella, who also had a game-high eight ground balls, scored three of her game-high four goals in the second half when the Owls outscored the Colonials, 5-3.

Leading 8-6 at halftime, the speedy Colella scored two coast-to-coast goals to give the Owls a 10-6 lead with 20:48 remaining in the game. Rachel Dionne scored two of her three goals to boost Westfield's lead to 12-7 at the 13:14 mark. Colella added another coast-to-coast tally with 9:11 remaining for a 13-8 Owl edge.

Westfield jumped out to early 3-0 and 5-2 leads but Western Connecticut knotted the score at 5-all with two straight goals from Nicole Perrone in a span of 16 seconds. The Owls regrouped to lead at the half, 8-6.

Most of the team stats were dead even:

- Shots: Westfield 29, WestConn 29
- Ground balls: Westfield 31, WestConn 31
- Turnovers: Westfield 25, WestConn 24
- Draw controls: WestConn 13, Westfield 12

But Westfield recorded four more saves than Western Connecticut (12-8), with Robinson making a number of outstanding stops in the second half.

The Colonials' leading scorer was Brianna Mitterando with two goals and two assists and Perrone had a team-high three goals. Shelby Ingrao and Devon Edwards each had two goals and one assist.
