Red Foxes Drop MAAC Match to Iona

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. Marist was defeated by Iona 14-10 Friday afternoon in the Breast Cancer Awareness Game at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. Marist's record fell to 4-9 overall and 1-3 in the MAAC. The high scorers on the day for Marist were junior Kelly Condon (Roslyn, P.A.) and sophomore Ashley Miller (Montville, N.J.) with three points each.

Offense came slowly as nearly five minutes pass before either team got onto the scoreboard. Iona took the early 1-0 lead within the first five minutes of the game. Marist junior midfielder Shannon Haas (Farmingdale, N.Y.) tied the score at one, coming off an assist from Miller with 23:29 left in the half.

Iona answered quickly with a goal from sophomore Kylie Gregory, within 10 seconds following Haas' goal. The Red Foxes then scored two unanswered goals, from sophomore Amanda Tuck (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) at 21:38 and junior Jori Procaccini (Long Valley, N.J.) at 15:11 to give Marist a 3-2 lead. Iona kept the game close with a goal coming off the stick of Angela Grous with 13 minutes left to tie the game at three.

After a short drought, Miller recorded her second point of the game, converting on a shot attempt that was ripped right past the Iona goalkeeper, which gave Marist the lead 4-3 with 6:13 on the clock. Iona scored again with a shot from Brenna Lade at 4:13. Marist finished the first half with a goal from junior Ariel Kramer (Syracuse, N.Y.) at 2:23 which gave Marist a 5-4 lead going into half.

Marist started the second half strong with Miller recording her second goal of the contest within the first minute of play extending the Marist lead to two goals. Iona answered with a goal from Collins, assisted by Lade, who recorded her third point of the game.

Kramer recorded her second goal of the game with 25:45 left, making Marist's lead 7-5. Iona then went on a three goal run, with goals from Collins, Gregory and Elizabeth Coholan to take the lead 8-7. Condon then tied the score at 8 with her goal coming 33 seconds later at 18:48.

From 16:29 to 4:57, Iona went on a 6-0 run, which ultimately did in the Red Foxes, extending their lead to 14-8. Condon and Procaccini netted goals 18 seconds apart as Marist looked to make a comeback with 3:47 remaining. Unfortunately all remaining attempts from the Red Foxes were denied as the team fell by a final score of 14-10.

As a team, Marist led in shots 30-28 and was 12-15 clearing the ball compared to Iona, who was 11-16.

The Red Foxes will next be in action of Sunday, April 17 as they travel to Manhattan for an important MAAC matchup, which will start at 8:00 p.m.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Iona College lacrosse team (5-10, 3-2 MAAC) ended its slate of 2011 regular season road games on a high note with a 14-10 triumph at Marist (4-9, 1-3 MAAC) to snap a three-game skid.

The Gaels were lifted to victory by a quartet of hat tricks from Brenna Lade (Morristown, NJ), Kylie Gregory (Bethpage, NY), Caitlyn Collins (Rockville Centre, NY), and Elizabeth Coholan (Syracuse, NY). Casey Scully (Huntington, NY) and Angela Grous (Washington Township, NJ) added one goal each to round out the scorers for the Maroon & Gold. Lade, Coholan, Scully, and Nina Veneziale (Old Bridge, NJ) all picked up one assist in the win.

The tight contest featured six ties and three lead changes, with Iona coming back from a 7-5 hole to tie the score with 22 minutes remaining. The squad pulled in front 39 seconds later on an unassisted tally by Gregory, but the Red Foxes quickly matched to knot the game at 8-all.
