Mesa State Too Strong for Westminster

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Mesa State men's lacrosse team (5-6) defeated Westminster College (Utah) 10-4 Friday night at Walker Field. The win is the Mavs' fifth consecutive and they remain undefeated at home. Westminster falls to 8-7 on the year.

Dakota Klossner scored the first of his three goals in the first 1:10 of the game for a 1-0 lead. MSC had 17 shots in the first period and held the Griffins to just one shot as the first period ended with the Mavs leading 1-0.

In the second period Jojo Milosevic, Michael Giffen and senior Ryan Swope (Milosevic assist) scored on three consecutive Maverick goals for a 4-0 lead. The three goals came within 2 minutes and 30 second as the Griffins struggled with turnovers. Westminster scored with just under 1:30 remaining to close out the half 4-1. Westminster was outshot in the first half 28-6.

Westminster opened the second half on a goal by Gian Sexsmith at the 14:02 mark. MSC would go on a five goal spurt for a 9-2 lead in the third period. MSC's five goals in the period is a season high.

Milosevic scored his second goal of the night (12:36) followed by Trace Wollner (Kade Robinson assist), Klossner's second goal of the evening, Kade Robinson scored to make it 8-2 (4:01) and Trevor Ecton scored (Dillon Bernad assist) with 2:40 remaining in the third period. Westminster closed out the period on a goal by Andy Butterfield to pull to within 9-3.

Butterfield would open the fourth period with his second and final goal for the Griffins (14:32) and a 9-4 deficit. MSC's Klossner would score his third and final goal of the evening with 2:32 remaining in regulation for a 10-4 Maverick victory.

Chris Burckle made nine saves in the cage for Westminster, but suffered the defeat. Butterfield and Jake Arthur attempted three shots apiece to lead the Griffins. Butterfield collected five ground balls with Ron Eichelberger grabbing three.

Goalkeeper Brad Brandenburg picked up his fifth victory recording three saves on the night for Mesa State.

Westminster will return to MCLA action on Saturday with a game at Western State in Gunnison, Colo. Saturday's game will face off at noon.
