No. 4 Limestone Edges Queens in CC Semifinals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Junior attack Racquel Prager (Seaford, N.Y.) scored a game-high four goals as No. 4 Limestone (14-0, 7-0 CC) posted a hard fought 10-8 victory over fourth-seeded Queens (8-9, 4-3) to advance to the championship game of the Conference Carolinas Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday, April 16. The Saints will face the winner of Pfeiffer and Belmont Abbey.

Tied at 6-6 at the half, sophomore midfielder Chelsea Treat (Penn Yan, N.Y.) gave Limestone the lead with a goal in the opening minute. It would then be a defensive battle for the next 16 minutes before freshman midfielder Katie Farrell (Brooks, Ga.) made it 8-6 with a free position goal at the 13:33 mark. Queens would respond with an unassisted goal by Caitlin O'Rourke in the next 13 seconds to cut the deficit back to one.

Following a seven-minute scoreless drought, the Royals would net the equalizer with 6:25 to play, knotting the score at 8-8. It would be the last score they would see as Farrell scored the go-ahead goal a minute later and Prager capped the victory with an unassisted goal with 3:38 remaining.

In the first half, Prager scored back-to-back goals in the first five minutes to stake Limestone to a 2-0 advantage before Amanda Martin got the Royals on the board with six minutes gone by. Prager would answer with her third goal nearly three minutes later to make it 3-1 but Queens would get consecutive scores by Martin and Jessica Rooney to tie the score at 3-3 with 17:10 to play.

The teams would then exchange goals before back-to-back goals by freshman midfielder Jessica Aguanno (Delray Beach, Fla.) and freshman attack Sarah Oor (Uxbridge, Canada) made it 6-4 with 5:39 to play. Over the next three minutes, Queens would draw even as Angelique Morabito (4:40) and Rooney (2:40) each recorded goals.

Jessica Rooney delivered a pair of goals and an assist to lead the Royals while Amanda Martin finished with two scores and a pair of ground balls. Emily Balmer added a goal and an assist to go along with a game-high tying four ground balls. Caitline O'Rourke had a goal, four ground balls and four draw controls and Kristi Kemp and Angelique Morabito each added a solo score. Shannon Casey chipped in with an assist.

Racquel Prager led all scorers with four goals and an assist for Limestone while Katie Farrell and Chelsea Treat each had a pair of goals. Sarah Oor had a goal and an assist while Jessica Aguanno added a single score. Senior defender Erin Growney (Rochester, N.Y.) finished with a team-high three ground balls and two draw controls.

Sophomore goalie Rashelle McLellan (East Lyme, Conn.) played all 60 minutes and made 12 saves to improve to a perfect 14-0 on the season.

Limestone advances to the championship game of the 2011 Conference Carolinas Tournament where they will face the winner of Pfeiffer and Belmont Abbey. Game time for that game is 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 17 in Charlotte, N.C.

Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year Emily Balmer tied the game up at eight on a free-position shot with 6:25 on the clock before Limestone was able to net two goals in the closing minutes winning 10-8. The Royals end their season at 8-9 (4-3 CC), while the Saints (14-0, 7-0) advance to the Conference Carolinas Championship game being played tomorrow at 1:00 pm at the Queens Sports Complex.

Limestone's Racquel Prager got on a roll early in the game scoring two goals in the first five minutes of play. Amanda Martin answered finding the back of the net for Queens making the score 2-1 with 24 minutes to go. Prager would strike again on a free-position-shot before the Royals scored two back-to-back goals tying the game up at three. Three more goals were scored by each team tying the game up at six at the half.
