No. 13 New Haven Edges Southern New Hampshire

MANCHESTER, N.H. Alexis Gabbe totaled four goals and scored the go-ahead goal with 3:12 left as No. 13 New Haven posted a 9-8 win over Southern New Hampshire in Northeast-10 action Saturday at Larkin Field. The Chargers improved to 8-5 and 6-2 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 6-5 and 4-3 in the league.

Ashley Ferrandiz finished with three goals for New Haven, while Sarah Mangone and Kristine Curry each posted single tallied. For Southern New Hampshire, Emily Mongeau (Westborough, Mass.) and Jade Antonangeli (Bourne, Mass.) each recorded three goals, while Phoebe Clark (Concord, N.H.) and Ashley Chu (Framingham, Mass.) each had single goals.

In a game in which neither team held more than a two-goal lead, Southern New Hampshire stopped a three-goal New Haven run with a goal by Chu with 11:51 remaining that knotted the game 7-7. The two teams remained deadlocked until Gabbe's tally with 3:12 remaining. Curry added an insurance goal for the Chargers with 1:52 left.

Following Curry's goal, the Penmen would win the ensuing draw and Clark would score with 1:30 left to make it 9-8. The Chargers were able to control the draw following Clark's tally and held the ball for the remainder of the contest.

New Haven opened a 3-1 lead 7:36 before halftime following Ferrandiz's third goal of the game, but the hosts scored the final four goals of the first half and Antonangeli's goal 2:47 before intermission made it 5-3 at the break. The two teams traded goals to start the second half before the Chargers reeled off three straight, and a Gabbe goal with 13:32 remaining gave the visitors their first lead of the second half, 7-6.

Maureen Spellman made 13 saves en route to the victory for New Haven, while Hannah Moriarty (Chelmsford, Mass.) turned aside 17 of the 26 shots she faced as the Penmen held a 29-28 shot advantage.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Monday evening when it hosts Bentley University for a 5:00 contest.
