No. 5 Cortland Slams the Door on WNEC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. No. 5 Cortland used a balanced scoring attack with six different scorers to defeat the Western New England Golden Bears, 9-1, in a non-conference match-up on Saturday (Apr. 16) at Golden Bear Stadium.

The Red Dragons, who are ranked fifth in the current USILA poll, improve to 10-2 on the year. The Golden Bears, who received votes in the USILA poll, slip to 10-4 on the season.

Cortland scored the opening goal in the first quarter on a man-up goal by senior attack Jay DiStefano (Huntington, NY) at 4:54. He was assisted by freshman midfielder Joe Slavik (Binghamton, NY).

After an extremely evenly matched first stanza, the Red Dragons stretched their lead to 6-0 before the half with a big second period.

Slavik scored on a feed from DiStefano to open the period, with two quick goals by junior attack Mike Tota (Webster, NY) to follow.

Senior midfielders Pat Hayes (Mastic, NY) and Neal Hopps (Akwesasne, NY) tallied the final two goals of the second.

The Golden Bears cut the lead to 7-1 in the third quarter on a goal from freshman attack Justin McKinney (Niskayuna, NY), assisted by junior midfielder Liam Bokanovich (Sandwich, MA).

Cortland added two goals in the fourth, as Hayes and senior midfielder Chris DeLuca (Sayville, NY) each added their second goals of the game.

Western New England held an edge in face-offs (9 of 14), with junior midfielder Joe Martin (Springfield, MA) winning 8 of 12 draws he took. Martin also led the team with four ground balls.

The Red Dragons converted 3 of 4 man-up opportunities, while the Golden Bears went 0 for 6. Cortland freshman goalkeeper Scott Tota (Webster, NY) made nine saves to earn the win in net.

WNEC junior goalkeeper Brewster Knowlton (Somers, CT) also made nine saves on the day.

Seniors Chris DeLuca (Sayville) and Pat Hayes (Mastic/Eastport South Manor) and junior Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) each scored twice for Cortland. Freshman Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) recorded a goal and two assists.

Seniors Jay DeStefano (Huntington/Harborfields) and Neal Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena) had one goal and one assist apiece and junior Greg Wright (Irondequoit/West Irondequoit) chipped in with two assists. Freshman goalie Scott Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) turned aside nine shots to earn the win.

Freshman Justin McKinney (Niskayuna) tallied Western New England's goal with junior Liam Bokanovich (Sandwich, MA) collecting an assist. Junior goalie Brewster Knowlton (Somers, CT) made nine saves.

Cortland led just 1-0 after the first quarter on DiStefano's man-up goal at the four minute, 54 second mark, but the Red Dragons outscored the Golden Bears, 5-0, in the second quarter for a 6-0 lead at the break. Tota netted a pair of goals, and Wright picked up both of his assists in the stanza.

DeLuca made it a 7-0 game at 8:19 of the third before McKinney finally put Western New England on the scoreboard at 7:30 of the third. Hayes and DeLuca finished the scoring with goals at 6:36 and 5:01, respectively, of the fourth quarter.
