Nazareth Edges Ithaca in Empire 8 Action

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth defeated visiting Ithaca 6-5 in a men's Empire 8 lacrosse game on a windy and rainy Saturday afternoon. Sophomore goalie Tim Doyle recorded the most saves of his Nazareth career with 13. Senior Scott Castle finished with two goals to lead the Golden Flyers' offensive attack.

With the victory, Nazareth remains undefeated in Empire 8 conference contests with a 5-0 record. The Golden Flyers improve to 9-3 overall. The Bombers, meanwhile, drop to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in conference games. Nazareth travels to St. John Fisher for a critical conference game against the Cardinals Wednesday evening.

With the poor weather, neither the Golden Flyers nor the Bombers were able to build more than a one-goal lead throughout Saturday's game. The game consisted of extended offensive possessions, but each defense thwarted the quick offensive attacks.

The first 7:02 of the first quarter, however, featured all of the period's scoring. Ithaca's Andrew Bruce scored the first goal of game 1:54 into the game, but the Golden Flyers answered with consecutive goals. Senior Joe Jacobs-Ferderbar set up a goal by junior Nate DeLone to tie the game 2:25 into the quarter. About a minute later, Castle found freshman Trevar Haefele with a pass, and Haefele buried his shot past the Bombers' goalie, David Gal. Ithaca and Nazareth traded goals in the following minutes. Castle's goal provided the Golden Flyers' the 3-2 advantage going into the second quarter.

The Bombers took the lead after a couple of fortunate bounces for Tom Mongelli. Mongelli scored twice for Ithaca within the first six minutes of the second quarter after collecting the rebounds following saves by Doyle. With Doyle out of position after the saves, Mongelli had an open net to convert each opportunity. Castle scored his second goal of the game with 3:57 to play in the period to tie the game, 4-4.

The Bombers held the Golden Flyers off the scoreboard the entire third quarter, but Nazareth allowed just one goal, by Mongelli, to keep the game close. Ithaca held possession for most of the third quarter. Doyle made a point-blank save on Bruce to keep the Golden Flyers' deficit at 5-4.

Nazareth scored a pair of unassisted goals in the fourth quarter to rally for the victory. Junior C.J. Estes tied the game 44 seconds into the final period. Sophomore Brian Wright scored the eventual game-winning goal with 7:34 to play in regulation. The Golden Flyers' defense held the Bombers off the scoreboard for the final 20:57 of the game, and allowed just Mongelli's lone goal in the second half. Castle intercepted an Ithaca pass into the Golden Flyers' box in the closing seconds to secure the victory.

Doyle made five saves in the first quarter and four saves in the fourth quarter en route to his 13-save game. Gal finished with nine saves for Ithaca.

With the long Bombers' possessions, Ithaca finished with a 36-25 advantage in shots and a 26-24 edge in ground balls collected. The Golden Flyers won 8 of 15 faceoffs with senior R.J. Gringeri finishing 8 of 14.
