William Smith Drops Liberty Match at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.-Skidmore held an 8-3 lead at halftime, and went on to defeat William Smith 13-5 in a Liberty League game played this afternoon. The Thoroughbreds improve to 9-4 and 5-2 in the conference, and the Herons are now 5-6 overall and 3-2 in the Liberty League.

Lindsay Stavola led Skidmore with four goals. Summer Segalas and Lauren Madden chipped in two goals apiece. Five other Thoroughbreds logged one goal. Ali Evans scooped up a game-high six ground balls. Rachel Klein finished with 13 saves for the win.

Junior Lucy Johnson and junior Katherine Vesce led William Smith with two goals apiece. Johnson and sophomore Kathleen Ragan each picked up four ground balls. Junior Kathryn Gillian scored a goal, and sophomore Marissa Potter earned an assist. First-year Maggie McNair played the opening 19 minutes in goal and made one save. Sophomore Jesse Wilson played 41:00 and turned aside six shots.

Just 2:36 into the game, Vesce put William Smith up 1-0. Skidmore answered with goals by Stavola and Lexi Melville. At 8:21, Johnson tied the game at two with an unassisted tally. Then the Thoroughbreds took control of the game with a 6-0 run. Stavola started it off at 17:07 in the first. Five different Skidmore players found the back of the net in the spurt to make it 8-2. Johnson registered her second goal of the afternoon just 17 seconds before the break.

Potter found Vesce 1:44 into the second half to cut the Heron deficit to four, but the Thoroughbreds took back the momentum with four straight goals. Robin Fetterolf capitalized on a free position at 5:03 to kick off the spurt, which put Skidmore up 12-4. At 16:16, Gillan scored her seventh goal of the year to make it 12-5, but Stavola fired a shot past Wilson with 7:02 left in regulation for the final.

The Herons held a 27-21 advantage in shots and a 29-25 lead in ground balls. Skidmore won 12 draw controls, while William Smith came up with eight.

The Herons will be back in action, Tuesday, April 19, when they host Ithaca for a non-league game beginning at 5:00 p.m.
