No. 9 Denison Upended by No. 15 Wittenberg

Denison outshot Wittenberg 37-32 but the Tigers held a 17-14 advantage in that department in the second half. Big Red goalie Nick Petracca (Manhasset, N.Y../Loomis Chaffee) posted 10 saves for Denison while DeOliveira notched 18 saves which was one shy of his career-high. The face-off numbers were close but the Tigers came through when they needed them most, winning 8 of 11 in the second half.

There were six penalties in the game and Walsh's first quarter goal was the only extra-man goal of the contest. Smith led DU with two goals, one assist, eight ground balls and three caused turnovers. Brown also scored twice and had two ground balls. Corey Daff (South Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham) did the majority of the face-off work, going 10 for 17.

Wittenberg was paced by Gipson's three goals and Lord's one goal and two assists. In addition to his 18 saves, DeOliveira also posted six ground balls. Elliot Avis was 9 for 17 at the face-off X.

The Tigers improve to 10-0 overall and 3-0 in the NCAC while Denison drops to 8-2 and 3-1 in conference play. Not only did this loss snap Denison's six-game winning streak in 2011. It also marked their first loss at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium since May 2, 2009, a streak spanning 11-straight home wins.

The Big Red will look to rebound next Saturday (April 23) when they travel to Gambier, Ohio for a 12:00 p.m. contest with Kenyon College.
