Assumption Holds off Furious Saint Anselm Charge

Manchester, N.H. (April 16) -- After trailing by an early 6-2 margin, the Assumption men's lacrosse rallied for a four-goal lead in the fourth quarter and held off a furious Saint Anselm charge for a thrilling 13-12 victory over the Hawks at Grappone Stadium on a blustery Saturday afternoon. The win is the eighth for the Greyhounds this season, setting the program's single-season record for victories.

The Hounds got on the board early as senior John Murphy (Walpole, Mass./Bridgton Academy) beat Hawk netminder Dan Flynn for the early 1-0 lead. Saint Anselm answered quickly though as the Hawks took a 3-1 lead before Connor MacNeil (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) made it a 3-2 game after one quarter.

The first 14 minutes of the second quarter were nearly all Saint Anselm as the Hawks built the lead to 8-4 and were seemingly in control. Assumption answered back in the final minute though as Gordon Champlin (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and MacNeil scored 11 seconds apart to make it an 8-6 game at the break.

All the scoring in the third quarter came from the Greyhounds as Assumption controlled the play for much of the period. The Hounds got goals from freshman Ian Mack (Avon, Conn./Avon), Chris Noyes (Tewksbury, Mass./Central Catholic) and Tom Guido (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) and took the lead at 9-8 thru three quarters.

After Dan Sullivan tied the game for Saint Anselm at 9-9 early in the final period, the Greyhounds tallied three goals in a span of 48 seconds and staked to a 13-9 lead. The Hawks cut the lead to 13-10 on a man-up goal from Andrew Messner with 3:24 lead and kept the pressure up.

A number of Greyhound penalties gave Saint Anselm a great opportunity late as Michael DeVita scored with 1:10 left, followed by Tim Glynn to make it a 13-12 game with 16 seconds remaining. A last-second shot by Saint Anselm went wide as the final horn sounded as Assumption won for the third time in its last four games.

Senior goalie Scott Vogel (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy-Liberty) made 13 saves for the win, while Flynn turned aside nine shots in the game in the loss. Assumption held a 21-13 advantage in shots on goal over the Hawks in the second period.

MacNeil led the Hounds with three goals, along with a game-high five assists. Murphy, Champlin and Mack all scored a pair for Assumption.

The Greyhounds improve to 8-5 overall and 4-4 in Northeast-10 play, while Saint Anselm drops to 1-8 overall and 1-5 in the league. Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, April 20th as the Greyhounds host American International for a 7:00 p.m. start at Multi-Sport Stadium.
