Merchant Marine Drops Conference Clash to Drew

BAYVILLE, N.Y. On a rain-soaked Saturday afternoon, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy lost to Landmark Conference-opponent Drew, 14-6, at Centre Island Town Park in Bayville, N.Y. With the win, the Rangers improved to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in league action. Following the defeat, the Mariners fell to 4-10 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

The Rangers opened up the game with five unanswered goals with two of those coming off Andrew Somps' stick. With 38 seconds left in first quarter, Kings Point finally hit the scoreboard with a goal from sophomore attacker Michael Ackerman (Malvern, Pa.). Senior attackman Zach Gray (Scituate, Mass.) was responsible for the assist.

To start the second quarter, Somps and Ackerman exchanged goals as Drew took a 6-2 lead. Then, with 4:38 left before halftime, Drew reeled off a trio of markers to up its advantage to 9-2. The Mariners were able to sneak in a goal before the intermission arrived as Gray netted his first of the game off a feed from junior attackman Sean Zakow (South Huntington, N.Y.) with 49 seconds left.

Both squads had two goals each in the third quarter, so the Rangers headed into the fourth harboring an 11-5 lead. Drew scored three times before USMMA notched its final goal of the game with 2:01 remaining in regulation. Drew went on to win, 14-6.

For the Mariners, Gray recorded two goals and two assists for a team-high four points, while Zakow scored once and dished out two assists. Ackerman had two goals and sophomore attack Phil Walker (Falmouth, Mass.) netted one. Cageminder Shawn Kane (Duluth, Ga.) received the loss (16 saves).

For the Rangers, Steve Gentile and Somps each had three goals and one assist, while Eric Tripp scored once and notched three assists. Goalkeeper Charlie DeSocio earned the win (18 saves).

Head Coach Tom Gill and the Mariners return to action next Saturday when they host league-opponent Catholic University. Game time is TBA. Please monitor for updates. Being the final regular season home game in 2011, the contest vs. Catholic will serve as Senior Day for Zach Gray, Philip Diamond, Robert Atkinson, Mike Trapani and Arthur Frooks.
