Crusaders Fall at Manhattanville in Triple Overtime

Purchase, N.Y. (Apr. 16, 2011) - Manhattanville College (6-5, 5-4) scored the game-winner in the third overtime for a 15-14 win over Alvernia University (9-4, 6-3) Saturday afternoon in Middle Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action at Field.

Manhattanville scored the last three goals of regulation then both teams scored once in the first overtime. The third overtime started sudden victory and the host Valiants pulled it out on a goal by Melissa Goncalves, her sixth of the game, with just over a minute on the clock.

Alvernia senior Felicia Sippel (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert), junior Sarah George (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin), and sophomore Allison Bainbridge (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) led the Crusaders with three goals each. Vicky Kearn (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) made five saves in 37 minutes. Jenn Czarnecki (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) stopped four in 36 minutes of play. Manhattanville goalie Kirstin Betsill stopped a career-high 25 in the win.

Manhattanvile scored the final four goals of the first half and the first of the second half to take an 8-4 lead. The Valiants' lead was 10-8 with 22:10 left to play before the Crusaders ran off five straight capped by a goal from Nora Walsh (Hatfield, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) to take a 13-10 lead with 8:27 left.

After Manhattanville's game-tying goal with 1:50 left in regulation both teams had a chance at a game-winner, but couldn't find the mark. Manhattanville went ahead with 1:20 left in the first overtime, but Alvernia answered with a goal from Bainbridge with 14 seconds left.

Neither team scored in the second overtime, and Sippel had a chance on a free position shot early in the third overtime, but was wide of the goal before Goncalves hit the game-winner.

Alvernia continues the conference schedule hosting FDU on Thursday.
