UMass Dartmouth Hangs on to Defeat Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine -- Massachusetts-Dartmouth outscored Southern Maine 7-1 in the third quarter to erase a one-goal halftime deficit, then had to withstand a furious Huskies rally in the final quarter to post a 12-10 victory in a Little East Conference men's lacrosse match Saturday afternoon at a cold and blustery Hodgdon Field.

The win was the third straight for the visiting Corsairs who reached the 10-win mark on the season. They are 10-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The Huskies dropped their second straight to slide to 3-8 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Senior Josh Arsenault (Revere, Mass.) sparked the Corsairs with four goals, all in the second half. Junior Christian Roberto (Wakefield, Mass.) had three goals and two assists for a five-point day. Rookie Jordan McPherson (Westwood, Mass.) chipped in with a pair of goals, and junior Nick Brett (Loudon, N.H.) dished off a pair of assists. Freshman goalie Nick Thayer (Chelmsford, Mass.) registered 14 saves to earn the win.

For USM, senior Tim Bryant (Peterborough, N.H./ConVal) led the way scoring five goals, three coming during the fourth-quarter rally. Sophomore Mark White (Oakville, Ontario) and freshman Dylan Bousquet-Smith (Bowdoinham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) each scored two goals. Sophomore goalie Kyle Dussault (Lewiston, Maine) had 11 saves.

Down 4-3 at halftime, the Corsairs took control of the game with seven goals in the third quarter. Arsenault scored two in the first 3:08 to give the Corsairs a lead they would never relinquish. After McPherson increased the advantage to 6-4, White tallied the Huskies lone goal of the period to pull the home side within one.

Roberto, senior Paul Nunes (Mansfield, Mass.), Brett and Arsenault scored the next four goals giving the Corsairs a 10-5 lead after 45 minutes.

Bryant led the Huskies' fourth-quarter rally scoring three times, the last with 3:31 to play to make it 12-10. Thayer came up with a big, left shoulder save shortly after to preserve the two-goal edge.

Southern Maine returns to action on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) hosting Plymouth State University for an LEC game. UMass Dartmouth entertains Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.).
