Castleton State Takes Down Westfield State

CASTLETON, Vt. - Marie Van Der Kar (Manchester, Vt.) scored seven goals and freshman goalie Ashly Neal (York Beach, Maine) made 12 saves to lead Castleton State to a 16-11 win over Westfield State in NEWLA action Saturday evening at Spartan Stadium.

With the win Castleton improves to 7-3, 2-1 while Westfield State falls to 5-4, 1-3.

Castleton trailed 3-1 after a Laura Chiricosta (Lexington, Mass.) free-position goal with 24:33 remaining in the opening half, but the Spartans reeled off six-straight goals over the next 14 minutes of play to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Van Der Kar started the barrage with 22:39 left, and Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, N.Y.) drew the Spartans even with a free-position goal three minutes later. Van Der Kar potted two more and Mazzola struck again to take a 6-3 lead with 12:40 left. Stephanie Paproski (Newtown, Conn.) capped the surge with an unassisted marker just inside of 11 minutes.

Maura Stack (Wilbraham, Mass.) struck back for the Owls, but Castleton scored the final two of the half and the first after intermission to take a 10-4 advantage.

The teams traded goals in the second half, but the damage was done as Castleton hung on for the win.

Paproski netted four goals on the evening, and Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, N.H.) added two goals and assist. Mazzola ended the night with two goals, and Sarah Clark (Guilford, Vt.) rounded out the Spartan scoring.

Carly Keeley (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and Chiricosta each had three goals for the Owls, while Rachel Dionne (Feeding Hills, Mass.) added two goals and an assist. Stack finished with a goal and an assist, while Becca Kelley (Westfield, Mass.) and Ari Colella (Franklin, Mass.) each had single tallies.

Van Der Kar, who now has a 37 goals on the season, also had game-highs in ground balls (6), draw controls (7) and caused turnovers (4).

Westfield State goalie Jill Robinson (Salem, Mass.) made 15 saves in the loss.

The Owls will host Becker College on Wednesday in a 4:00 p.m. NEWLA clash, while Castleton will travel to NEWLA foe Fitchburg State Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
