No. 15 Simon Fraser Loses to No. 3 Arizona State

TEMPE, AZ (Friday, April 15, 2011) No. 15 Simon Fraser struggled to battle back from an early 7-0 deficit, losing 16-6 to No. 3 Arizona State in a regular season rematch of the 2010 MCLA semifinals.

Freshmen Calvin Craig (Coquitlam, BC/Gleneagle Secondary) 3g and sophomore Eric Ransom (Sherwood Park, AB/Bev Facey High School) 1g, 2a, led SFU with 3 points each in what was the Clan's lowest offensive output of the season and only the second time in 2011 that they have been held under double digits.

Arizona State controlled most of the first quarter when a late 3:00 minute unreleasable stick penalty to the Sun Devils gave SFU new hope at 4-0. With penalty time carrying over to the second quarter, the Clan would be unable to capitalize on the man advantage, instead giving up a goal shorthanded as 5th year senior Ryan Westfall (Danville, CA/Monte Vista HS) scored his third of the game to push the ASU lead to five. Arizona State would score twice more in the second quarter to race out to a 7-0 lead before Fraser was finally able to solve a strong Sun Devil Defense to make it 7-1 at the intermission.

Arizona State continued to set the pace in the second half scoring the first two goals of the third quarter to reset the score to 9-1 until Craig registered his second of the game to get Fraser back on the board at 9-2. The Clan would begin to find some rhythm offensively as the two teams continued to trade goals back and forth until they finished the quarter at a score of 12-4.

Clan sophomore Colton Dow (Coquitlam, BC/Heritage Woods Secondary) opened the fourth quarter scoring with his only goal of the contest to make it 12-5. Arizona State would then go on a four goal run before Ransom completed the scoring for a 16-6 final.

Freshman goaltender Darren Zwack (Sherwood Park, AB/Archbishop Jordan High School) made only his second start in net for the Clan, and first versus a ranked opponent, making several quality stops to finish the day with 14 saves. Sophomore standout Dylan Westfall (Danville, CA/Monte Vista HS) was impressive in the ASU net backstopping the Sun Devils for just over 57:00 minutes, before giving way to back-up Christian DeLuca who made 1 save in limited action over the final 2:24.

Simon Fraser will travel two hours south to Tucson, AZ on their day off to wrap up their trip to the Copper State with a game versus No. 21 University of Arizona on Sunday, April 17. Arizona State will now have six days off before also facing in-state rival Arizona in their final game of the regular season.
