Torrey Pines Upends St. Ignatius Prep in Thrilling California Showdown

Thanks to a clutch goal by Bennett Shafer, Torrey Pines defeated St. Ignatius Prep, 10-9 in overtime, in a battle between two of California's most talented teams. The reserve midfielder was thrust into the starting lineup due to a number of team injuries and proved to be the unlikely hero on Friday.

It appeared early on that Saint Ignatius Prep was a step ahead after the squad jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. But the Falcons battled back with five unanswered goals to take a 5-4 lead into intermission and setting the stage for a thrilling second half. Torrey Pines then held a 9-8 advantage late in the fourth before J.W. McGovern scored with four seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into an extra session.

Meanwhile, Torrey Pines (9-3 overall) improved to 4-0 in overtime games this season, which include wins over Arapahoe (CO) and Coronado (CA).

And finally, Rancho Bernardo edged Poway 9-7 this weekend in another key clash pitting two top five teams from LaxPower's California state rankings. The victory marked just the second time in program history that Rancho Bernardo has ever defeated Poway. The Broncos benefited from strong goaltending by Zach Weaver on top of three goals from Justin Adams. Matt Landon led the way for Poway with three scores.
