Kiesel Saves Career-High 25 as USM Downs RIC

GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore goalie Samantha Kiesel (Lakeville, Mass./Kents Hill) stopped a career-high 25 shots to backstop University of Southern Maine to a 13-7 victory over Little East Conference rival Rhode Island College at Hodgdon Field Tuesday afternoon.

The win was the third straight for the Huskies who improve to 5-8 overall, and remain unbeaten and tied for the top spot in the conference at 3-0. The Anchorwomen fall to 4-7 overall and 0-4 in LEC play.

Coming off a season-best, 17-save performance at Western Connecticut State University on Saturday, Kiesel was virtually unbeatable in goal as the Anchorwomen poured 38 shots towards goal. Kiesel, the LEC Rookie of the Year last season, had 10 saves in the opening half as the Huskies built a 7-2 advantage. She made 15 more stops after the halftime break to protect the lead. The 25 saves are the fifth highest single-game total in school history.

Providing the offense for Southern Maine were freshman Jackie Kelly (Brunswick, Maine) and sophomore Shelby Turcotte (Lewiston, Maine) with four goals apiece. Sophomore Lauren Santo (Salem, N.H.) added three goals, and senior Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, Maine/Pomfret School) chipped in a pair of markers.

For the Anchorwomen, junior Nicky Drolet (Somersworth, N.H.) led the offense with three goals. Classmate Molly Voyer (Lincoln, R.I.) contribute two goals, and rookie Ashley Signoriello (Cranston, R.I.) had a goal and an assist. Freshman goalie Taryn Carbone (Cranston, R.I.) made 10 saves.

With Kiesel holding down the fort on the defensive end, the Huskies slowly built a 7-2 lead. Santo had three goals, and Kelly two, in the opening 30 minutes. Leading 3-2 with 18 minutes left, the Huskies scored four straight goals to close the half.

RIC trimmed the deficit to three on two occasions in the second half. Drolet scored her team-high 32nd goal of the season to pull the visitors within three at 8-5 with 22:48 remaining. Voyer scored with 6:39 to play to make it 10-7, and momentum seemed to be swinging in favor of the Anchorwomen.

Vaughan got the ensuing draw control and the Huskies killed nearly three minutes off the clock before Kelly scored. Santo scored 32 seconds later, and Turcotte sealed the win scoring with 1:11 to play.

Southern Maine will host Keene State College on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) in an LEC match. Rhode Island College will play at Wheelock College tomorrow evening (7:00 p.m.).
