Blazers Close Home Slate with Win vs. Gwynedd-Mercy

FREDERICK, Md.--Hood College (8-8) got back to the .500 mark with a 7-3 nonconference win over Gwynedd-Mercy College (5-8) Tuesday in Hood's home finale at Thomas Athletic Field.

Juniors Scott Thompson and Corey Roberts and senior Dominique Shorter scored two goals apiece and senior Kris Miner notched a single tally for the Blazers. Sophomore keeper John Martin racked up a career-high 19 saves between the pipes and evened his record in goal at 3-3.

The Griffins drew first blood with a Roy Bakeoven score in the opening minute of the game. Hood evened things up at 1-1 when Alex Engler fed Roberts for the tying score at the 5:35 mark. Roberts and Miner hooked up for a man-up goal in the final minute of the period to give the Blazers their first lead. The goal was Miner's team-leading 25th of the season, marking a new single-season record for the program.

Senior Nick Spicer collected his fifth assist of the season when he set up Roberts at the 12:21 mark to extend the Blazer lead to 3-1. Roberts notched his 18th goal of the spring. Nicholas Coan pulled the visitors to within one 34 seconds later, but the Blazers had the final say in the half on Shorter's 15th tally of the season at the 9:33 mark.

Bakeoven wasted little time finding the back of the net once again in the third quarter, scoring his team-leading 22nd goal 1:12 into the third quarter to make it 4-3 Hood. Though the Blazers were held scoreless in the third period, Thompson stepped up in the fourth quarter and registered consecutive scores in addition to setting up Shorter for his second tally of the game for the final margin.

The Griffins won 10 of the game's 14 face-offs in defeat.

Hood looks to clinch the program's first-ever winning season next Tuesday at Susquehanna University. The Blazers and Crusaders face off at 7:00 p.m. from Selinsgrove, Pa.
