Big Red Starts Hot, Downs Washington & Jefferson

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Alex Thurner scored four times in the opening 15 minutes to fuel a 6-0 Denison run, and the Big Red led by as many as 11 goals in a 16-9 victory over Washington & Jefferson on Tuesday evening.

Denison (9-4) scored the first six goals of the game and then poured in the first seven goals of the second half to roll to its sixth consecutive victory.

W&J (10-3) finally got on the scoreboard at the 14:42 mark of the first half as sophomore midfielder Brittany Fradkin (Owings Mills, Md./St. Paul's SFG) netted an unassisted goal. She scored two more times in the first half, including a goal with eight seconds left, to bring the Presidents to within 8-4 after 30 minutes. However, the Big Red put the game away with seven goals to start the second half during a span of 14:20. Lulu Carter found the back of the net twice during the second-half opening spurt.

Thurner finished with five goals to lead DU, while Jenny Strathern produced two goals and three assists. Seven different Big Red players scored goals and Grace Bodenmann made 12 saves in goal, including seven in the second half.

Denison outshot the Presidents by a 36-24 margin and scored on 6 of 9 free-position shots. DU also held a slim 14-13 edge in draw controls. Both teams committed 23 turnovers.

Fradkin paced the W&J offense with four goals, while senior attacker Courtney Schrock (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) and junior midfielder Brittney Oake (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) both added a pair of goals. Oake notched one assist, while junior midfielder Lauren Novak (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) rounded out the W&J goal scorers with one tally. Sophomore Julia McLellan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) suffered the loss after allowing 11 goals on 21 shots in 14 minutes of action.

The loss snapped the Presidents' win streak three-match win streak. W&J looks to get back into the win column on Thursday at Waynesburg (6:00 pm).
