Randolph-Macon Scores at 0:01 to Sink Captains

ASHLAND, VA Erin Clare Cassidy's goal with just one second remaining on the clock capped a run that saw Randolph-Macon score the final five goals of the game to take a 12-11 victory over USA South Conference Champion Christopher Newport Wednesday afternoon in Ashland.

R-MC (7-8), which trailed by as many as five goals on three different instances during the contest, found itself down 11-7 with just under 16 minutes to play when Cassidy struck on a pass from Kelly Egan to make it 11-8.

The Yellow Jackets got the ball back following a draw control and Cassidy scored 43 seconds later to pull R-MC within two at 11-9.

The score would stay that way until 8:35 left in the game when Rachel Johnsen was able to draw a penalty and earn a free-position shot which she bounded past the CNU keeper for the score.

Following Johnsen's goal, CNU gained possession and went into its stall formation. The Yellow Jackets were able to force a turnover and set up on the offensive end with under a minute to go. Cassidy moved to the back of the cage and was able to wheel a wraparound shot into the net with 47 seconds to go.

The Captains were able to gain control of the ensuing draw control, only to turn the ball over; giving Cassidy and the Jackets the opportunity they needed to win the game.

Cassidy finished with seven goals and six key draw controls. Egan had one goal and dished out four assists, three of those to Elyse Cooper, who registered a hat trick. Alex Flammia made nine stops in the cage, including several that kept CNU from widening its lead early in the game.

CNU, which is now 13-3 on the year, won the USA-South Tournament and clinched a berth in the NCAA Tournament, last week, was led by Caitlin Quigley who had five goals on the day. Hannah Wilkerson matched Flammia with nine saves.

Randolph-Macon will close out its regular season on Saturday in an ODAC match up with Washington and Lee at 1:00 p.m. in Lexington.
