New England College Outguns University of New England

HENNIKER, N.H. -- Junior Amanda Naime (York, Maine) and sophomore Rebecca Harvey (Natick, Mass.) tallied four goals apiece to help pace New England College in a 17-12 The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's lacrosse victory over the University of New England Wednesday evening at Don Melander Field.

The result leaves both squads at 3-8 in TCCC games, a half game out for the final spot in the postseason tournament. Nichols College (3-7) still has a home match with Curry College (8-2) on Saturday, before any seeding can be determined.

Senior Emily Kuchta (Norwalk, Conn.) added three scores and four assists for the Pilgrims (5-11), who received goals from six different players early on to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 6-1 advantage near the midway point of the opening half.

The teams came out even after the next six goals (9-4), and UNE first-year Sadie MacLean (Henniker, N.H.) made the margin four at the break with a marker at the 0:49 mark.

Classmate Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) began the second frame with her 40th goal of the season to draw the Nor'easters to within 9-6, but the visitors could not get any closer.

NEC reeled off the ensuing five goals -- all from Harvey, Kuchta, and Naime -- to go up eight (14-6) with just over 20 minutes remaining. Big Blue closed the gap to 16-12 inside a minute left in regulation on goals nine seconds apart from juniors Jenna Barton (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and Jessy Dvorak (Windsor, Conn.), before a final marker from Harvey.

Pilgrims junior Sam Aucoin (Henniker, N.H.) chipped in with a pair of goals to aid the offense, while classmate Caroline Doherty (Miller Place, N.Y.) matched her season high with 16 saves in goal.

Tavella and Dvorak notched three scores each for UNE (4-12), and both MacLean and Barton registered two. Senior Danielle Cate (Boscawen, N.H.) contributed a goal and two assists for the Nor'easters, who finished with a 19-12 edge in draw controls.

Big Blue, which received 11 stops from first-year Samantha St. Pierre (Mechanic Falls, Maine), is back in action Thursday at No. 8 Colby College (4:30 p.m.).

NEC will travel to Thomas College for a non-conference tilt on Saturday (11:00 a.m.).
